Inclusive Schools Week has arrived and schools around the United States and the world are ready to begin the celebration! For the past few months we have heard from many of you about your plans to take an hour, a day, or the entire week to recognize the tireless efforts of educators, families and students to create positive school communities in which ALL members are truly included!
We hope you have drawn inspiration from the many celebration ideas and tools on the Inclusive Schools Network site. We want you to know that we are motivated by each of you and your commitment to schools that are equitable, accepting, and above all, student-centered!
This year we are particularly excited to launch the theme for 2012: Social Inclusion: More than a Seat in the Class!
We were led to this theme by the recognition that while physical and academic inclusion, though still not fully achieved, have been active targets for some time, many students remain as socially excluded from their typical peers in inclusive settings as they were when educated in separate classrooms or buildings. We hope that the increased attention to this year's theme, along with ideas we can share on the Network, will result in great new relationships and opportunities for ALL students!
Enjoy the week! Raise awareness of the work that remains! Celebrate our shared progress toward Inclusive Schools!
