2014 Rubber Recycling Symposium
This fall, Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS) participated in the Rubber Recycling Symposium, hosted by the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC). The event took place last October in Montreal, Quebec, and brought together industry leaders from across the world.
Executive Director's Message
Andrew Horsman, OTS Executive Director, and Zach Dryman, OTS Director of Information Technology, had the opportunity to share their industry insights during panel discussions throughout the event. Discussion highlights included hearing about the development of new materials for tire production, which aligned well with OTS’s ongoing objective to develop high-value markets for recycled rubber. The presentations also focused on ideas for future projects that explore how to maximize the utility and usage of recycled rubber by tire manufacturers.
"I enjoyed seeing several OTS stakeholders at the event,” said Zach. “This demonstrated to me that some of our program participants are very interested in the health of the recycling industry as a whole, not just their business.” Thank you, TRAC for hosting this engaging and informative event!
As we move through the holiday season and reach the end of another great year, I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on one of OTS’s core values—innovation —and more specifically innovation that leads to better outcomes for the environment, for the industry and for the communities we all live in and serve. Throughout the year, OTS has made this kind of beneficial innovation a priority: we have made great strides in new areas like electronic manifesting, and have enjoyed continued success with our OARA Tire Take Back and Rethink Tires Roadtrip programs. Timberland joins forces with Omni to create recycled footwear outsoles
Timberland, the lifestyle brand and retailer, recently teamed up with tire manufacturer and distributor Omni United to create Timberland Tires. The innovative new product offerings will be an industry first, with a line-up of tires created and designed to eventually transform into footwear outsoles at the end of their useful life on the road. The partnership marks an important innovation in tire diversion – specialty tires created with end-of-life use in mind.
YMCA and Sustainability: a chat with Alex Versluis
We had the opportunity to sit down with Alex Versluis, Vice President, Property Management at YMCA of Greater Toronto
to discuss all things sustainability. Like OTS, the YMCA values sustainability in everything they do as evidenced by our exciting collaboration in the OTS Student Design Challenge.

We partnered with Ziya Tong, host of Daily Planet and OTS Ambassador to create a quick, fun video to let Ontarians know what happens to used tires once they're taken for recycling.
YMCA Central Toronto: Redesigned space unveiled
Last quarter, we shared the news about the OTS Design Challenge unveiling at the Toronto Central Grosvenor St. YMCA Centre and we’re pleased to report that the event was a big success! Held in the newly renovated concourse area outside the YMCA, guests sipped on hot chocolate to ward off the chilly November wind as they took in engaging speeches and explored elements of the community space
