Tell the federal government a new law is needed to protect free speech in Canada

For decades, Canadian charities have given voice to Canadians who want social change, better health and a clean and safe environment. But some of the rules governing charities are so ambiguous and outdated that it’s hard to know what they can and cannot do.

Tell the federal government to keep its promise of creating a new law to protect your right to be heard through the charities you support, like KAIROS. Read more.

Celebrating female human rights and nature defenders in Ecuador

It felt like Oscar night. But rather than Los Angeles, I was in Quito, Ecuador. Rather than actors and directors, defenders of water, forests and communities were being recognized for their accomplishments. I was at the 30th anniversary of Acción Ecológica, a KAIROS partner and exemplary environmental organization that’s a beacon for the rights of nature. Read more.

The critical role of women in peace building remains strong and visible in Colombia

The day after my arrival in Colombia, I was travelling on the Magdalena Medio River in a small ferry with Gloria Amparo, coordinator of the  Organización Femenina Popular (OFP),  to visit women’s centres (casas de Mujeres) in Puerte Wilches and Cantagallo. Read more.

KAIROS Blanket Exercise brings understanding and empathy

“Those with blue cards, please step off the blankets.”

And with those words, I was asked to take a seat.... For the next 20 minutes, I watched as facilitators pulled back and removed the blankets – representing the lands inhabited by indigenous people – that once covered the floor of the St. Albert United Church, as Gallant led the group through a historical timeline of Canada’s formation. Spirited Reflections

Citizens in God’s Commonwealth, by Rev. Desmond Jagger-Parsons

"When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God."  Leviticus 19:33-34 NRSV Anglicized

When I returned from the World Council of Churches Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel in 2005, I preached on that passage from the Torah until I just couldn't listen to that sermon any more.  In the conversations in social media and in our house in the aftermath of the U.S. elections, I have to admit, this passage has been reading me again.  Read more.
