Education for Reconciliation momentum builds!

We’re now one month in and beginning to see movement across the country on the Winds of Change campaign. The Education for Reconciliation workshop (found in the Action Toolkit) has been presented at least a dozen times in four out of five KAIROS regions!

Audiences have been as diverse as high school students, church members and political activists, so facilitators are adapting the workshop to suit different situations. In this blog post, Ian Thomson, KAIROS Africa partnerships coordinator, offers creative ways to adapt the workshop for a high school setting. To date, just over 100 people have downloaded the petition. With your help, we look forward to seeing that number grow much, much higher. Downloading the petition is now easier and instantaneous and does NOT require a sign-in. Get your copy now

The campaign videos are proving to be a popular way to introduce the petition and motivate people to get out and gather signatures. Watch them here

There are only three months left to complete and mail in as many petitions as you can. One enthusiastic supporter said she was going to make hundreds of copies! If each one of you filled (and mailed to KAIROS) just two or three copies of the petition we would have as many as 90,000 signatures! What a voice for reconciliation that would be!

Stay tuned for the second stage of this campaign beginning early in 2016. It will include campaign updates, webinar training sessions on MLA/MPP visits, and a public statement that like-minded organizations will be asked to sign.

Five Options to Host a Workshop or Event to Support the Education for Reconciliation Action

A great way to get people engaged is to host an event. Check out these options and send us an email when you have something planned: events@kairoscanada.org

Petition Stocking

Enhance your holiday giving (without spending a cent!)

With Education for Reconciliation, KAIROS has embarked on a challenging campaign. In this day and age when online petitions can gather thousands of signatures in a matter of days and more people carry smart phones than pens, we are asking people to print and circulate a PAPER petition. HOW are we going to collect enough signatures to make a difference with any government?

Rather than dig into your pocket, give a gift of reconciliation this holiday season. Sign the petition…and ask your friends and family to do the same. Learn more.

COP21KAIROS offers in-depth review of Paris climate talks

KAIROS and its member churches are mobilizing to bring news and analysis from the COP21 climate change conference in Paris. We are publishing a series of blog posts to assess the prospects, the achievements and the challenges that will remain when COP21 ends in mid-December.

The blog features the voices of Indigenous peoples and KAIROS partners from the global South as well as analysis by KAIROS Staff. Read more

KAIROS members made their presence felt during the 100% Possible March for Climate Solutions and Justice and other climate marches on November 29th. KAIROS was a proud sponsor of an event that saw 25,000 people converge on Parliament Hill. Watch the Video.

Protecting women and the Earth in Guatemala

Rachel Warden, KAIROS’ Latin American Partnerships and Gender Justice program coordinator, spent the last week of November in Guatemala, marking the International Day to End Violence Against Women. She saw firsthand the remarkable work of KAIROS’ partner CEIBA to end violence and build resiliency through care of all living things.

Rachel shares her insights in two blog posts:

KAIROS has just released a short preview of a new video about its work with Indigenous women in Canada and the Global South on the gendered impacts of resource extraction.  The full video will be available in 2016.

KAIROS marks the 5th Anniversary of the endorsement of UNDRIP and urges implementation

KAIROS would like to acknowledge that the Government of Canada and the Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, have just celebrated the fifth anniversary of Canada’s endorsement of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and are committed to its implementation. KAIROS applauds the Canadian government’s collaboration with Indigenous peoples on MMIW inquiry

KAIROS welcomes the federal government’s decision to collaborate with Indigenous peoples on an inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada. It is fitting that in the midst of 16 Days of Activism to end Gender Based Violence (November 25-December 10), and immediately following the 26th anniversary of the Montreal massacre, Canada would announce a process with the intention of ending the vulnerability to violence of Indigenous women and girls, a situation that has long been not just a national, but an international, scandal. Spirited Reflections

The World is About to Turn: Sermon on Luke 1: 46-55, Jennifer Henry

On June 2, 2015 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its summary report and 94 calls to action. Inspired by Métis Activist Chelsea Vowel’s challenge to read the report, young Indigenous activists organized on Twitter to create a series of YouTube videos of themselves reading the 337 pages out loud under the hashtag #ReadtheTRCReport. Their determination came from a complete unwillingness to have this report shelved like the 1996 Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, and so many others before it. Could the country be about to turn? Read more.
