WHAT IS A NATIVE PLANT?

“The generally accepted principle is that native plants are those plants which have inhabited a particular region for thousands of years, arguably plants that were present in a particular area prior to European settlement.” Georgia Native Plant Society

Florabundance Gardens specializes in growing native plants that attract pollinators and wildlife to your garden and landscape.

We continually seek insight and information to share with our customers about the plants we grow and sell. Click on the description of each plant for basic gardening information and perhaps a bit of history. This year we will be adding butterfly host plant information.

We focus on growing, but we do our best to provide accurate botanical names for our plants.

Most of the native plants grown at Florabundance are native to the Coastal Plain region of Georgia. We also offer native plants from other Georgia regions and SE coastal areas that will grow here.

ORNAMENTAL PLANTS

At Florabundance we also grow other non-invasive plants that are hard to find and provide landscape interest and/or habitat for wildlife. These include hardy topicals like canna lilies, ginger lilies, and bananas, and Heritage plants like gardenias, loquats, and century plants.

RESOURCES to EXPLORE

The Georgia Native Plants Society (https://gnps.org/georgias-native-plants/) has abundant information on natives and their differences with other plants that are found and grown in Georgia.

The USDA Plants database (https://plants.sc.egov.usda.gov/home) distribution map provides information on where specific native plants have been documented.

The Biota of North America Program (http://www.bonap.org) represents the first comprehensive attempt to provide state and county-level distribution maps of vascular plants contained in the study area.

Late winter is a great time to plant in Southeast Georgia!!
