COVID-19: 'Each of Us is Impacted Differently'

CS Area Offers Multiple Staff Support Resources

Jonathan Carter, who recently took over as Associate Laboratory Director for the Computing Sciences Area (CSA), hosted his first All-Hands Meeting on March 18, where he focused on the CSA, Berkeley Lab, and DOE responses to the COVID-19 crisis and the Bay Area’s shelter-in-place order.

“We are living in interesting times, and I want to thank you all for being so adaptable and professional in dealing with the challenges we are facing,” he said via a live video chat with staff employees. “While many things are proceeding pretty much as normal, many of us are anxious about the current situation, and each of us is impacted differently. So let’s offer encouragement and patience to one another.”

During the hour-long virtual meeting and Q&A, Carter touched on topics ranging from how staff are coping with working remotely to the impact the telework and shelter-in-place orders are having on operations. He and other representatives from the CSA Directorate and Human Resources also shared key program updates and links (see below) to helpful resources.

Deadlines for some funding proposals are being extended. These include:
  • LDRD proposal submissions – new deadline: March 27
  • DOE Early Career Research Program – new deadline: March 30
  • National Quantum Initiative – new deadline: April 17

CSA employees should also take note of these recent Lab-specific changes:

  • Lab shuttle bus service is currently suspended.
  • For the time being, the only physical entry point is Blackberry Gate.
  • If you need to go to the Lab for any reason, clear this with your supervisor first and be sure you have your Lab ID with you at the gate.

You can also view the March 19 Berkeley Lab Town Hall meeting where Lab-wide information was presented. (Today's meeting, and future briefings, will be posted in the lab's video library).

Additional COVID-19 information, including a podcast with Chris Fall, Director of the DOE Office of Science, is available on the DOE website.

Check out the Covid-19 website created by the Lab and updated daily with useful information.
For those seeking assistance in dealing with anxiety and stress, the Lab’s Employee Assistance Program offers a number of solutions.
California's statewide stay-at-home order is in effect until further notice. The Bay Area's shelter-in-place order remains in effect through April 7.
