When Bernard Russo greeted us with a smile and strong Italian accent, I wondered about the small sign Bienvenue (French for welcome) on the front door.  The next morning I met his lovely wife, Tessa, who is of French and Belgian decent, and does all of the cooking at this historic inn. Located in Valle Crucis, NC, her breakfast menu was outstanding...

The Road to Childhood Memories

by Sharon Rusch Shaver

What is it about our memories that can bring so much baggage with them that we can almost forget the present moment with all of its surprises? "Who are all these people?" That is what I am always saying to myself in my dream world, and now I was living it, at my 40th high school reunion. First a name...

Artists, Writers and Explorer Excursions

September 17th to the 24th 2013

A few notes on the upcoming excursion to Italy
A special place for you still remains on this journey, It is not too late to join us!

we will be exploring this truly interesting medieval, walled city.

Bagni di Lucca

is very close to the Villa where we will be staying, a walk down the old cobblestone "shepherds path" takes you into the valley where the baths of Lucca are located. Several of the ancient Roman Spas have been renovated. With natural water temperatures of 104 degrees!

will be an exciting full day trip. Museums, architecture, art and fashion! We will be booking point to point rail tickets to get there. It is the best way to travel in Italy, fast, comfortable and inexpensive. We plan on renting cars, but probably will not use them very often except for short trips to the train station and surrounding hillside villages for painting and exploring.

Two optional day trips are the

Cingue Terre

which is the rugged volcanic coastline, with colorful villages perched on the edge.  We would be taking a train to the northern-most village, Monterosa al Mare, and then water taxis along the coast to the other villages for that full day trip. Easy on and off the boats for exploring. They have the best views of the villages from the water, so it would be perfect for photographs, and those that join us, who are able, can do some hiking in the area. We have the names of several restaurants in that area that have great local seafood, prepared traditionally as only Italian Chef's can do.

The Island city of

will involve one overnight stay and we will be reserving rooms there for us in advance, so please let us know if you would like to join us. We have found an interesting B&B in the city center of Venice for one night. That would be a 16th Century Palace, with rooms facing one of the many canals, that has been turned into a residence for visiting guests.
