Visitor Center & Aquarium Hours
The Visitor Center/Aquarium is currently open Friday-Sunday 10-4 . Come on in and meet our two Spotted Croakers. The average spotfin croaker (Roncador stearnsii) is 10-12" in size, and weighs a pound. The largest caught in California was 27 inches long and weighed 10.5 pounds.
They produce their "croaking" sound by contracting muscles along their digestive tract/gut which resonate off of their swim bladders. They prefer shallow sandy bottom inshore waters in general as that is where their food items live. They have large pharyngeal teeth that are used to crush clams, which make up a majority of their diet; crustaceans and worms are also eaten.
