Evolutionary scientists have a difficult time explaining how morality, especially altruistic behavior, developed by means of mutation and natural selection. The “holiest” doctrine of evolution–survival of the fittest–is the very antithesis of altruism. “You would expect those who are best at cheating, and taking but not giving, to be coming out ahead. Their genes should be on the rise while altruistic genes would be going away.”1 But though this is what evolutionary scientists would expect, this is not what has happened or is happening.

In an attempted explanation of this problem, Richard Dawkins stated in his 2006 documentary The Root Of All Evil “Our true sense of right and wrong has nothing to do with religion. I believe there is kindness, charity and generosity in human nature. And I think there is a Darwinian explanation for this. Through much of our prehistory, humans lived under conditions that favored altruistic genes. Gene survival depended on nurturing our family and on doing deals with our peers.”2 . . .

Digital Library

The Mt. Vernon Church of Christ is building a digital library to aid serious Bible students in their study.  When possible, we will be adding new volumes.  We are grateful to the many sources from which we draw these volumes for making these available.  We take no credit for them ourselves.  We do not necesarrily endorse everything in every volume.  We simply provide them as aids to Bible study.  This week:

An Analysis of the Book of Mormon - A. Campbell

Catholicism Debate - Campbell - Purcell

Some years ago the F.B.I. issued a report which listed six ways in which young people get hurt. These six avenues consisted of activities that could ultimately lead young people into ruin. It is interesting that dancing was number two on the F.B.I. list. The other potentially dangerous activities included drinking, gambling, parking and petting, reckless driving, and mixed swimming.

With the advent of modern rock music and its counter culture, the modern dance has become so popularized that for a teenager not to dance is considered "strange." However, let it be noted that sound gospel preachers, godly elders, and devout Bible teachers, without exception, have stood solidly against the modern dance. By word of mouth, in the pulpit, and before Bible classes, we have taught our young people to avoid this worldly form of popular pleasure. . . .

Golden Thought

People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going. – Earl Nightingale

cf. Heb. 12:1,2; Phil. 3:9-14

THE FAMILY BIBLE

Old Brother Higgins built a shelf
for the family bible to rest itself
lest a sticky finger or grimy thumb
might injure the delicate pages some.
He cautioned his children to touch it not
and it rested there with never a blot
though the Higgins tribe were a troublesome lot.

His neighbor, Miggins, built a shelf
“Come children,” he said, “and help yourself.”
His book is old and ragged and worn,
with some of the choicest pages torn,
where children have fingered and thumbed and read.
But of the Miggins tribe I’ve heard it said,
each carries a bible in his head.
