Bring the whole family and join us for Bible study and worship this Lord's Day!

Worship is an important and necessary part of the Christian’s life. However, some Christians complain that they don’t get anything out of worship. We must remember that worship is not primarily for us, but for the Lord. But here some basic, practical suggestions to make worship mean something to us, too,

First, get some sleep and be rested for the morning worship and Bible study. It is hard to worship God and study God’s word when you are struggling to keep your eyes open (Matt. 26:40,41). There are so many distractions in our lives these days and many of them are very important. But there are none as important as obeying the Lord and worshiping Him. We make certain we get our rest when we know we have to go work. How could the Lord’s work and worship be any less important? . . .

Digital Library

The Mt. Vernon Church of Christ is building a digital library to aid serious Bible students in their study.  When possible, we will be adding new volumes.  We are grateful to the many sources from which we draw these volumes for making these available.  We take no credit for them ourselves.  We do not necesarrily endorse everything in every volume.  We simply provide them as aids to Bible study.  This week:

The Sacred Writings - Alexander Campbell

Preacher’s Companion - Alexander Campbell

Home Life of Campbell - Selina Campbell

Jesus said that God requires worship and that our worship is to be "in Spirit and in truth." He went further and said that God seeks sincere, spiritual worshipers. His exact words were, "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in Spirit and truth; for such doth the Father seek to be His worshipers. God is a Spirit; and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and truth" (John 4:23,24).

The inference from these words is that real worship is a most profound privilege, never to be treated lightly or complacently. Today the tendency in religious assemblies is to be increasingly informal, shallow and emotional. In these modern days it is easy to be outwardly pious in worship but inwardly unconcerned. It is entirely possible for worshipers to fail completely to worship as the Christ directed and, in failing, they miss one of the most uplifting privileges ever given to human beings. . . .

Golden Thought

Sunday is the golden clasp that binds together the volume of he week.
-- Longfellow

I Will Praise Him

I will praise Him in the morning,
When the day is new and bright,
I will praise Him in the noontime,
When the sun is at its bright,

I will praise Him in the evening,
When the sun is sinking low,
And His love will then enfold me,
As to Him in prayer I go.

I will praise Him for the sunshine,
And my blessings every day,
I will praise Him in the shadow
Of the trials He sends my way.

And when sorrows fill my mornings,
I will think of joys to come,
For I know He guides the future,
And I’ll praise His plan well done.

Bible Question of the Week
(All questions come from the Scripture readings.)

In what kind of worship of the "Unknown God" did the Athenians engage?

From where do the things that defile a man come?

Matthew 15:19,20 - For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
