2021: Year of the Ox, individual illustration

Shiho Pate’s playful art is inspired by her childhood memories, her Japanese culture, her immigrant life in America and her 6-year-old daughter.  With a warm, colorful style that brings together the joyful exuberance of her multiple art techniques—gouache, watercolor, digital media, and more—Shiho creates inventive, energetic scenes and characters that are both endearing and enduring. 
From Mr. Moon and the Tailor, a work-in-progress
Shiho burst on the scene as an artist for several indie gaming studios in NYC. Her sense of fun and intuitive understanding of children drew her into the world of social and mobile gaming for more than a decade, and now she is directing her passion into her lifelong love of children’s books.  Since her debut fiction book, 2 PIRATES + 1 ROBOT (Henry Herz, Kane Miller, 2019),  Shiho's work has been feted by SCBWI numerous times, has been selected as a runner-up in Creative Quarterly, and has been exhibited at Gallery Nucleus. Look soon for Shiho’s nonfiction debut in the new ANIMATED SCIENCE series from Scholastic—PERIODIC TABLE (Fall, 2021) followed by ROCKS AND MINERALS (Spring, 2022)—fun and informative comic companions with bright, light-hearted illustrations.

Shiho graduated with honors from the Savannah College of Art and Design. During her spare time, she enjoys gardening and practicing Japanese with her daughter, playing video games with her husband, and learning how to cook American food.  (Her apple pie is everyone's favorite!) Shiho lives in Orange County, CA.
