The 'Official' End of Summer

Happy Wednesday, Toledo.

Labor day has always meant two things to me. First, it is always a sign of the official end of summer. Further evidence? This is the last weekend to enjoy the City of Toledo pools, and the last day to swim is Sunday.

Second, it is a time to stop and show appreciation to the many men and women of labor who build things, fix things keep us safe, and strengthen our neighborhoods. I want to especially thank the members of the City of Toledo workforce unions for their exceptional service every day: AFSCME Local 7, AFSCME Local 2058, AFSCME Local 3411, IAFF Toledo Firefighters Local 92, Teamsters Local 20, Toledo Fire Chiefs’ Association Local 3382, Toledo Police Command Officers Association, Toledo Police Patrolman’s Association Local 10, and, UAW Local 12.

This year's Labor Day Parade will be Monday, September 5 at 10:00. City of Toledo offices will be closed. If you need something, Engage Toledo will be available at 419-936-2020.

Finally, the City of Toledo received a final audit from the State of Ohio this week. Because of the hard work of the team in the Finance Department, we received an overall exemplary report. You can read the report on our website at toledo.oh.gov/audit.

Have a great week, Toledo.

It Was a Jazzy Week in Toledo

A hope you had the chance to attend the Glass City Jazz fest on Sunday, or one of the many events that lead up to the exciting event. Congratulations and thank you to all of the planners, performers, venues, and supporters of this inaugural event.

I was pleased to be able to present the Key to the City of Toledo to local legends Larry Fuller and Joey Sommerville. You can read more about the event HERE.

Resuming Normal Water Utility Operations: In-Person Customer Service Available Beginning September 1

Beginning September 1, the Department of Public Utilities will be resuming regular operations, including water shutoff for non-payment. Residents with a past due water balance have a number of options when it comes to paying their bill.

To make it easier to pay, or if you need special assistance,  the in-person customer service center will reopen to the public on September 1. Office hours will be Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Glass City Center Is Here!

What a wonderful afternoon we had at the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the brand new Glass City Center.  An amazing complex that will continue to change the future of the Downtown.   Conventions, meetings, parties, and weddings hosted in the new facility will add millions to the local economy.

Congratulations to all who played key roles in the creation of the Glass City Center.  Congratulations to our friends at Lucas County Commissioners on this achievement.

Kid Mayor and Kid Council at Mud Hens

The first-ever Kid Mayor and Kid Council had a great night with their families at the Toledo Mud Hens Game last week. Mayor joined the kids along with our friends from the Arts Commission, Toledo Mud Hens, and Metroparks Toledo to learn about teamwork.

Working with our amazing community partners as a team is how we get things done.

The group will next meet in November at a City of Toledo Fire House.  Then, they will make a final policy recommendation to the adult Mayor and Council.   We look forward to their big idea!

Local Business Spotlight: Tex-Mex Tortilleria

As part of an ongoing series of spotlights on local residents and businesses, this month we highlight the amazing work of Rosemary Quinones.  She and her husband Alex have been working in their South Toledo neighborhood for many years, making some regionally famous corn tortillas.

You can read all about her and her business at the link below.
