A Fun and Safe Summer

It is hard to believe that we are in the first week of August. But, there is still time to enjoy more of summer! Summer concerts, movie nights, and youth activities are still going strong in our City of Toledo parks, presented in partnership with so many community organizations. Don’t forget, our pools are open until Labor Day!

Last night, I enjoyed the National Night Out event presented by the Human Relations Commission, Metroparks Toledo, and the Toledo Lucas County Public Library at the Frederick Douglass Center. There was so much for kids and families to do, not least of which interacting with Toledo Police, Toledo Fire, and Lucas County Sheriff officials. This event was part of a nationally scheduled day to highlight the importance of positive and supportive relationships between residents and public safety. Thanks to all who came out and all of the community organizations who joined in the effort. It was truly a wonderful evening.

It was my pleasure to meet with the new interrupters who have been brought on as part of the Save Our Community program. The new team members are in training now. They will be working in both the Junction and Vistula neighborhoods beginning August 10. They are enthusiastic and passionate about the work they will do. I look forward to them getting started!

Don't forget to join me this afternoon at 4:30 for this month’s live Wednesdays With Wade. You can tune in through the City of Toledo Facebook page.

Have a great week, Toledo.

Designation of "Officer Anthony Dia Memorial Highway"

This week, I joined other elected officials, members of the Toledo Police Department, and friends and family of Anthony Dia to announce the renaming of a portion of Alexis Road in honor of fallen officer Anthony Dia. The memorial highway spans between Bennett and Gage Roads, near the Home Depot parking lot where officer Dia was killed 2 years ago.

Celebrating the International Year of Glass

August 2 has officially been named International Year of Glass day in the City of Toledo. I was pleased to be able to present the proclamation at the Libbey plant this week. In addition, I was able to take a tour of the Pilkington Plant in Rossford. Our city, the Glass City, owes much to the glass industry of yesterday and today. I am pleased we are joining businesses and community partners in celebrating the International Year of Glass in 2022 through upcoming tours, lectures, and other fun events.

Sale of Former North Towne Square Mall

I am pleased to announce the sale of the former North Towne Square Mall property to NorthPoint Development. NorthPoint plans to invest $85 million to construct three speculative industrial buildings totaling 852,000 square feet. Spec buildings are a major advantage in economic development because the risk to a potential company is significantly reduced since the building is already built – especially in today’s high inflation environment.

Empowering Future Leaders

I had the opportunity this week to visit one of our summer programs from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Ohio called Empowering Future Leaders at Robinson Elementary School. And wow, were those kids having a great time! I loved talking to the team about my job as Mayor and their job as residents of the City of Toledo.
