'Tis the Season

The holidays are a wonderful time of year to spend time with friends and family, to focus on the joys of the year and look forward to the future. However, walking into stores this time of year can be overwhelming to say the least--aisles of pink with dolls and rows of blue bikes and toy soldiers! Last year during the holiday season, a Swedish magazine featured gender-blind advertisements. Creating advertisements that depicted boys playing with blow-dryers and girls using electronics opposite their usually advertised gender role. The article mentions many steps the company is taking to create gender equality including training their employees to respond to questions about gift gifting in a non-stereotypical way.

Check out the article here. AAUW is also getting involved in holiday gift giving this year, check out the Holiday Gift Guide for Girls. Happy holidays!

Introducing the AAUW State Organizere for Colorado
Katherine Yelle
Profession: State Organizer, AAUW
How did you get involved with AAUW: Well, they hired me, but before that I used to attend meetings and forums here in Flagstaff as the representative for various women's groups, AAUW was often represented as well.
Best advice you have for university women:  Write in the margins of your books.
Hobbies/Volunteer Work: I still get involved with local issues and campaigns, usually around immigration or other social justice issues.  I love to cook, ride my bike, sew, and sometimes I stitch inappropriate sayings on throw pillows.
Favorite Quote:  That's hard.  I am going to go with Gloria Anzaldúa: "All reaction is limited by and dependent upon what it is reacting against".  It's from Borderlands/La Frontera.  In the part of the book where she writes this she is trying to explain that social movements against patriarchy/racism/colonialism/etc get locked into a dualistic moral battle of oppressor v oppressed.  Recognizing this is a first step, but there is a second step as well where you stop reacting and start creating action.  I think that is a very powerful idea.
