DEC 3 | EDITION #79
It's Friday Jr, friends. Two degrees out here, and I'm drinking very cold sweet iced tea. Not the smartest boi in the room, but it is what it is. Let's dive in.

🍺 Beer Talk: Setting Trends
A couple nights ago, I opened Twitch to watch some shit before sleep and somehow landed into a channel of a dude playing chess. I played chess two times in my life probably when I was 10 and I can care less about it. But ended up watching two hours of it, unreal. This made me think a lot about how fascinating trends are.
  • Chess is 1500 years old. In recent years nobody gave a fuck, until now.
  • Covid, Twitch, and the raise of strategy games put a spotlight on it.
  • Viewership started to raise, gambling got in place.
  • In October 2020, Chess.com got 125M games played and 5.3M accounts.
  • Gaming started to incorporate chess as another arm. TSM and Cloud 9 signed chess players.
  • Netflix realizes "wait.. wtf? Chess is the new trend?.. alright, say less". The Queen's Gambit is produced.
  • 62M households watched the series in its first 28 days of release, which makes it Netflix's most popular scripted limited series ever.
I'm watching chess on Twitch after consuming 7 episodes about a game I have never played in my life. A trend is so much more than a product, it's a process in culture and society empowered by companies making the right move at the right time. The interesting part is that everybody benefits from it, a trend is the perfect outlet for a collaboration. The people at Netflix probably never spoke with the people at Twitch, but imagine if they did before releasing the show.

📺  VR Esports
When I look at the future of competition-entertainment, I see it in a virtual reality form. Technology will get us there one day. The first attempts will be both praised and shit on by people. But remember that every success story has a starting point.

🏀 Not Just a Game
Kevin Durant and NBA 2K announced a first-of-its-kind partnership. This isn't just about being the cover. KD' branding, ideas and outlets will be involved too with the objective to push the development of the game and the community around it.

🗄 The Subreddit That Matters
Reddit finally revealed some user numbers. They had 52M daily users in October.

🎞 EXCEL x Peaky Fookin Blinders
BBC is producing a 5-part documentary about the UK-based org EXCEL, and it will be narrated by Cillian Murphy. What a G, this is such a great pick. Besides the doc, they signed Dele Alli as an ambassador + went through a huge rebrand. Big things are coming for this team.

🏆 Esports Updates
👏 The Best To Ever Do It
The latest Fortnite event accumulated 15.3M concurrent players, 1.7M people watching on Youtube Gaming and 1.5M on Twitch. The true magic sauce its in their collaborations though. Kids are like Hansel and Gretel, and Fortnite laid out the bread crumbs trail. They eat the first piece which is an NFL skin, then a MARVEL one, then a Star Wars one, then a Travis Scott one; until they get to the candy house which is the huge event where everything is possible. Two differences:
  • Epic Games didn't prepare a trap to kill the kids, they are smarter than that. They created a vicious circle where kids will get into the next bread crumbs trail once the event is done.
  • Bread and candy ain't free here.
