Dalat Receives Exemplary Accreditation
During the 2018–19 school year, Deputy Head of School Shawna Wood led the Board of Governors, administrators, teaching staff, and families through an extensive application process for renewal of accreditation through the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). While Dalat has been accredited by ACSI for over 24 years, the organization now offers an Exemplary Accreditation status for schools that achieve and maintain the highest levels of excellence in K–12 education.
Dalat International School is excited and proud to announce that it has been granted Exemplary Accreditation status from ACSI. With this designation, Dalat becomes one of only 15 schools in the world and the first one outside of the United States to receive this highest level of recognition.
ACSI shares that obtaining Exemplary Accreditation means that the school has completed a thorough self-assessment and collaboratively created a school improvement plan addressing key internal and external aspects of school organization, achievement, and operations with requirements that are clearly a mark of an influential school.
Congratulations to all who participated in achieving this important milestone during Dalat’s 90th year!
Alumni Reception on Campus
It was great to see several alumni this past June at a reception held in the Dalat library. Thanks for stopping by and reconnecting!

Play is Learning...Learning is Play!
With big thanks to our generous parents, alumni and friends, Dalat’s elementary students have gained a whole new world of play spaces to explore! Several brand new climbing structures, a giant two-story slide, a hilly amphitheatre and three basketball hoops were installed this summer on two different campus locations. Our students love them!
In conjunction with the new spaces and structures is an elementary-wide commitment to more playtime throughout the school day. Research on play tells us that it enhances neurological connections and improves brain functioning, truly a critical part of a child’s development. Play fosters creativity, problem solving, flexibility, and language development. It’s also a powerful tool for expanding a child’s imagination and nurturing positive social skills and cooperation, overcoming challenges, and coping with stress and emotions. While adult experts can explain these links between play, early literacy and numeracy, our youngest experts tell us that “it’s just really super fun!”
Dalat Alumnus Terry Baxter Inducted as Fellow of the Society of American Archivists
Alumnus Terry Baxter (Class of 1977), an archivist for Oregon’s Multnomah County Records Program and the Oregon State Fair, was inducted as a Fellow of the Society of American Archivists. The distinction of Fellow is the highest honor bestowed on individuals by SAA and is awarded for outstanding contributions to the archives profession.
Nominators noted that Baxter’s work as an archivist is tied directly to his core values as an individual, sharing that “Baxter’s initiative, resourcefulness and leadership—wrapped in his commitment to helping archivists make the world better—are reflected throughout his 34 years of service to SAA and other professional organizations, his writings and presentations, and his personal interactions.”
Baxter is also a founding member of the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums, and a board member at the Northwest History Network.
Lilian Li Class of 2017 Alumna...and New Writer
Lilian Li is soon publishing her new fictional book House of Koi about a girl who transfers from an American international school (like Dalat!) into a Malaysian private school.
Lilian shared that “I want to show people the flavorful, colorful world of Malaysia. It also became a personal project for me to unpack the events of my life and my own struggles with identity. My hope is that, in reading this book, you will discover Penang and the complexities of high school, identity and love. In this book, I hope to instill in others the same sort of passion and excitement that I have for Malaysia. And ultimately, I want you to see this book as a tool to help you open your mind to diverse literature.”
