THE 2016 ORPHEUS CLUB QUARTET CONTEST (OCQC)

On Saturday evening, April 16th, 67 Associates / guests were joined by 26 Singing Members / guests for the Second Annual  (Associate-judged) Quartet Contest.  This benefit event raised over $1800 for the Club, and we are grateful to all  attendees and participants. After cocktails and substantial hors d’oeuvres, we were  treated to entertaining “afterglow” segments before and after a spirited competition among seven well-prepared quartets.  The offerings ranged from Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” to the Four Freshmen to the Partridge Family theme song to Guns and Roses and Bob Dylan – all with challenging four-part harmonies.  When the ballots were all tallied, The Philadelphia Fourchestra (pictured below, from left to right: Sean Mullen, Mike Maicher, Kevin Chemidlin and Zach Augustine) won the title for their haunting rendition of Dylan’s romantic ballad, “To Make You Feel My Love.”   HOWEVER, Sean will be in Spain on May 11th, so the runner-up quartet, Appetite Four Destruction (Matt Lewis, Alfred Bergbauer, Mike Liggera & Timo Weymouth), will offer their “faithful” take on the G&R classic, “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” at the Spring Concert.  NOT TO BE MISSED!

NOTE:  DVD’s of both last year’s  and this year’s events will be available for $15 at the May 11th concert.  Come to the table in the lobby.

SPRING CONCERT

On May 11th, we will be in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center with a program entitled “Life’s a Happy Song.”  You will hear that number and several other highlights from the 2016 Revels, some wonderful new arrangements from Albert Oehrle, a great quartet, some choral classics and more PLUS  the return of Hudson Shad, that elegant / iconoclastic vocal ensemble / band in the spirit of the Comedian Harmonists.  (See a moment from their 2012 appearance, above). Come one and all – and bring your friends! (Having guests at the concerts is  the best way to share a key element of the Orpheus experience.)

ASSOCIATE EXPANSION PROGRAM (AEP)

The Orpheus Singing Membership would not have the opportunity to make their music without the loyalty, warmth of spirit, and generosity of our fellow Associate Members. You are all such fun to entertain, and we really appreciate your support. I wanted to remind you that all Associates have the opportunity to share the Orpheus experience with their friends and colleagues by proposing new members. Simply have the candidate complete this form and mail it to the address indicated; OR email the information to Alfred Bergbauer at orpheusassociatechair@gmail.com. You will be notified after your candidate has been elected.

Expanding the base of Associates will enable the Orpheus Club to remain financially sound and allow us to enhance our entertainment programs. We are eager to add new events for us all to enjoy. Additional information, forms, and Associate Membership Benefits brochures will be available to take with you at the Mid-Winter concerts. PLEASE PARTICIPATE IN THIS VITAL PROGRAM.
  • New Member Party. All new Associates and Associate Proposers of new members will shortly be receiving an exclusive invitation to the Inaugural New Member Party. Cocktails and music at the Clubhouse from 6 to 8pm on Friday, May 13thSAVE THE DATE

  • Top Proposers to the Finish Line. At the end of the season, we will recognize that Associate who proposed the most new members in the course of the year. The member’s name will be prominently displayed in the Clubhouse, and he or she will receive two additional tickets to the 2017 Revels. At this moment, there are FIVE Associates tied with two proposals each! (You know who you are.) We are very grateful for your successful efforts this year, and It is not too late to bring in the prize-winning addition to the Orpheus Family. (Plus we can’t afford to give everybody extra Revels tickets.)

ASSOCIATE COLORS

The OC Cummerbunds are SOLD OUT, and only a few Associate Bow Ties remain.  We still have some Associate neckties (shown here worn by Duncan Grant) that will be perfect for the non-Black Tie New Associate Member Party.   Remaining inventory will be available at our Information Table at the May concert.  If you want to place an order before that or put your name on a waiting list for the OC Cummerbund sets, please send an email order to tratner@comcast.net

We also have several NEW ITEMS , including OC formal Studs and Cufflink sets at $150 (pictured here), OC umbrellas for $23, custom-ordered embroidered Belts ($249) and formal Slippers ($395).  If you are interested in any of these, please contact new singing member Lawrence Choi at lchoi98@gmail.com.

ORPHEUS CLUB APPEARANCES

Radnor Hunt:  On Saturday, May 21st, a small group of OC singers led by our Vice-President, Judd Van Dervort, will get the festivities rolling with an harmonious rendition of the National Anthem. Afterwards they will adjourn to a North Infield Rail tailgate location where they would be delighted to have you drop by. In addition to refreshments, we will have information for prospective Associate Members. At approximately 2 p.m. there will be some (relatively) organized singing at the O.C. tail gate including the hunt favorite, “John Peel”!

Independence Hall 4th of July Ceremony: On Independence Day, the Orpheus Club is honored to once again provide the music for a beautiful patriotic ceremony run by the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution, on the south side of Independence Hall, right where the Declaration of Independence had its first public reading!

The ceremony starts at 1 p.m. on July 4th, ending with a 2 p.m. ceremonial tapping of the Liberty Bell by descendants of Signers of the Declaration. (The sound is broadcast to the audience.) This triggers a simultaneous bell ringing across the nation! It is a wonderful ceremony, open to the public, with ample seating always available.  Please come out and enjoy with the O.C. and the “Sons”!

NEW OC SINGING MEMBERS

We continue to prosper as a musical organization by attracting talented new men to the ranks of Singing Memberships.

Our latest addition is a First Tenor named Pat Walsh.

That’s it for now!

I hope you found this information useful, and it helped you take note of the important dates upcoming for Orpheus Members. We’re working to make the Orpheus “experience” fuller for all members, and we look forward to your taking part in as much as you can.

Yours In Song,
