Yours In Song - Issue No. 15

November 2018

Post-Thanksgiving Greetings to Members of the Orpheus Club
We hope you all enjoyed safe travels and bountiful celebrations of all the people and things that bring joy to your lives.

It has been the busiest Fall season for the Orpheus Club in memory. We have been working hard to burnish the Orpheus Club “brand” among deserving organizations and existing & prospective Associate Members. At the same time, we are devoting every Monday evening, as usual, to preparing a wonderful Christmas Concert.

This issues will cover the following topics:

Upcoming Events

New Associate Member Welcome Party To Be Rescheduled

Date and Time TBD

Our new member event originally scheduled for Thursday the 15th fell victim to the early “winter” weather and dangerous travel conditions. We have not yet determined the date for the first party of the season, but you can’t go wrong by putting on your calendar the date of the second party, Thursday, May 16th.

New members should be on the lookout for an updated email invitation from Co-Chairs Brad Schrader ( and Mark Still (  We hope your schedule can accommodate the date change.

P.S. If you are proposing a new member this season, please inform them of this date and put it on your calendar too! Associate proposers are encouraged to attend and collect your etched OC tumbler.

OC at the Powel House

Sunday, Dec. 2nd at the Powel House
Come kick off the holiday season and celebrate several Philadelphia traditions.  Re-live Christmas-past at this beautiful landmark residence at 244 S. 3rd Street with an open bar and sumptuous buffet – plus caroling led by members of the Orpheus Club. From 5:00 to 8pm, in festive cocktail attire.

Contact MARGARET LONZETTA, if you’re not already on the mailing list. This is a great annual holiday event for friends and family.

OC Christmas Party

Saturday, Dec. 8th at the Clubhouse

Join us for this exclusive holiday gathering of Orpheus Singing and Associate Members at our home, suitably festooned for the occasion. There will be drink and food – likely another victimized pig – caroling and dancing to the Joe Claffy & Billy Handy Society Orchestra. You don’t want to miss it.

Outreach Event Recap

An important part of our charter is to bring the joy of male choral singing to support worthy organizations and others who are less likely to be to attend our formal events in Center City.

RYERSS FARM – On Sunday, October 14th
A group of Orpheus singers joined organizer and auctioneer Sam Griffin at Radnor Hunt for the annual fund raiser for this home for aged equines.   An Alfred Goodrich trio entertained during cocktails, and after brunch, we filled the hall with OC favorites and the rousing sound of the Bacchus Boys.

Twenty-three singers presented a full program at this lovely not-for-profit facility to an appreciative audience, including past Orpheus Presidents Charlie Wood and Bob McAdoo. We took them from spirituals to Fred Wampler’s classic “Don’t Tell Mama!” to the Rat Pack’s rendition of Freddie Mercury’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” (not Bohemian Rhapsody – see below) to the Bacchus Boys spirited “Circle of Light” medley. It was all well-worth the trip to the wilds of Bryn Mawr!

If you know of an organization that would merit an OC Outreach performance, please contact Rob Gunther at

Quartet Contest Recap

This year was our 14th straight Quartet competition and the FIFTH year in which lucky Associates got to enjoy a delightful cocktail party followed by spirited and melodious performances by well-rehearsed quartets.  Then the Associates got to vote for the winning quartet, who get both bragging rights and the opportunity to perform for everyone at the Mid-Winter Concerts.

OC Membership Development Events

In a continuing effort under the leadership of Associate Chairman Lawrence Choi, we arranged for two events this fall to “spread the word” on Orpheus to targeted audiences from which we would hope to attract new Associate Members.

U Penn alumnus and employee and new Orpheus Second Bass Brad Richards arranged for the Alumni Club Board to hold its Fall meeting at the Clubhouse on Wednesday, Sept. 25th and then host a beer and wine reception for its members – for whom we put on a program that showcased the quality and range of Orpheus entertainment.  The tour of the Revels cast pictures in the upstairs “gallery” didn’t hurt either.  Those attendees who expressed an interest will get the opportunity to also experience the more formal side of things at the Christmas concert.

We already have a healthy overlap of members between OC and RCOP, and mutual member Frank DeSimone felt it would be good to go on the road to 16th Street  and  remind others of what Orpheus has to offer. Thanks to his organizational effort, we convened on Nov. 7th in the lovely first floor Reading Room (with bar) and again presented a program of varied talents and musical styles.  See Dwayne Grannum gripping the crowd with “Old Man River” and Frank cheering the winners of a raffle for Revels tickets. The event was very well-received, and we hope to see many of the attendees at the Christmas concert, as well.

Further Outreach:

If you know of an organization whose members you believe would appreciate the many benefits of Orpheus Membership (see the annual brochure), please contact Lawrence at or any other friend who is an Orpheus Singing Member. We would love to explore opportunities for further exposure among good prospects.

Spread The Love:

It is also important to note that while these events do yield some new members, we still need ALL our members to identify new individuals and families who would enjoy the kind of fellowship we share. Our unique brand of entertainment is available to all. Please refer to your annual brochure to help relay the benefits of Associate Membership to your friends.

OC Colors

In response to significant demand, we have finally placed an order for 40 Associate Cummerbund & Bow Tie sets. The Bow being sported here by AMAC member Val Sauri has the crest-only Associate pattern, and the Cummerbund has the unique, combined Associate Crest and Singing Member Stipes design worn by ALL Orpheus members.  Each item is $50, and the set is $100 – billable to your member account.

The vendor is promising delivery the first week of December, so get your orders in NOW to Maureen at, and you’ll be able to pick them up and wear them at the OC Christmas Party (Dec 8th) or the Christmas Concert (Dec 12th).
