Leptospirosis Vaccine Update

A birdbath or eavestrough is the perfect place for one of Toronto's many racoons to transmit Leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis Vaccine Recommendation updated to “Strongly Recommended”

Leptospirosis is an extremely serious illness that can cause severe, lasting liver and kidney disease, sometimes leading to death in dogs. The bacteria that causes the disease is spread in the urine of infected raccoons and skunks. Leptospirosis survives and thrives in stagnant water, such as that in backyard ponds, gutters and eavestroughs--just the places that are frequented by skunks and racoons.

With Toronto’s large raccoon population, Leptospirosis is now a significant risk factor for city dogs. We are now treating several cases per year, and the pets in question are severely ill. Studies are now indicating that small dogs are more likely to become infected, possibly because they are less likely to be vaccinated.

Learn more about how you can prevent you dog contracting Leptospirosis, and why we've upgraded our vaccine recommendation to “Strongly Recommended.”

Did You Know?

We have “Cat Parking” in our waiting room.

Cat Parking is a convenient cubby where you can put you cat’s carrier while you're waiting for your appointment. Your cat is out of the way of intimidating feet and dogs, and can be faced out to see you, or toward the wall if he or she is very nervous.
