ICDP Commissioner Bill Richardson visits the US State of Delaware to support efforts to repeal the death penalty

On 27 March Commissioner Bill Richardson visited the US State of Delaware to lend his and ICDP’s support to the efforts to repeal the death penalty in Delaware. He was accompanied by the ICDP Secretary- General Asunta Vivo Cavaller.

UN Human Rights Council event on International Actions with the view to abolishing the death penalty

On 3 March 2014, the Permanent Missions of Argentina, Norway, Mexico, Switzerland, Algeria, Italy and France and the International Commission Against the Death Penalty (ICDP) organized a high-level event at the sidelines of the High-Level Segment of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva to discuss “International Actions with the view to abolishing the death penalty”. The panelists discussed how the process of abolition developed in their respective countries and how the governments of Argentina and Mexico have assisted their nationals who have been sentenced to death abroad.

Commissioner Dreifuss introduced ICDP and its actions to advance the cause of abolition of capital punishment as part of the international abolitionist movement.

High Level Panel Discussion on the Question of the Death Penalty

On the 5 of March 2014, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) organized a High Level Panel Discussion on the Question of the Death Penalty in Geneva. The High Level Panel was convened by the Human Rights Council pursuant to its decision A/HRC/DEC/ 22/11.
 
ICDP was represented in the Panel by Commissioner Mrs Asma Jahangir, who discussed and exchange views on advances and challenges relating to the abolition of the death penalty and the introduction of a moratorium on executions in Asia. ICDP supported the call by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay that all states that still retain the death penalty should as a first stage introduce a moratorium and to aim for a suspension of capital punishment on grounds that death penalty is incompatible with human rights.

Opinion piece by the President of the ICDP Mr Mayor and Commissioner Dreifuss

On the occasion of the side event on the 3rd of March, at the Human Rights Council, ICDP published an article in the International Affairs Forum, Digital Journal and All voices highlighting the process of abolition of the death penalty and the vulnerability of foreign nationals facing the death penalty in jurisdictions other than their own.

Mass death sentences in Egypt

Following a trial held on 23 and 24 March 2014, 529 individuals were sentenced to death by the criminal court in Minya, Egypt.

Upcoming event:

Combatting Torture and Abolishing the Death Penalty in the OSCE Region

ICDP Commissioner Ioanna Kuçuradi will participate in the side event "Combatting Torture and Abolishing the Death Penalty in the OSCE Region : two sides of the same coin?" which will take place on 11 of April in Vienna.

The side event will be held during the Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting on Prevention of Torture organized by the Swiss Chairmanship and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
