How States abolish the death penalty

On the occasion of its 7th Meeting, the 15 of April 2013, ICDP launched its report "How States abolish the Death Penalty" in Oslo City Hall. The publication reviews processes towards abolition of capital punishment through studying the experiences of 13 countries. This report outlines practical steps that States can take to abolish the death penalty.

 7th Meeting of the International Commission against the Death Penalty 15-16 April 2013 

The International Commission against the Death Penalty (ICDP) held its 7th meeting in Oslo on 15 and 16 of April 2013. During the Meeting, the Members of the Commission met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway Mr. Espen Barth Eide.

ICDP welcomes a new Commissioner at the 7th Meeting

During the 7th Meeting of the Commission, Ms. Hanne Sophie Greve, a judge and Vice President of the High Court in Bergen, Norway and former judge on the European Court of Human Rights, joined as a new member of ICDP and participated in the meeting.

ICDP will become an official supporter of the Campaign to ratify the Second Optional Protocol to the ICCPR

During the 7th Meeting of the Commission, it was agreed that ICDP would be an official supporter of the Campaign to ratify the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights aiming at abolition of the death penalty. The Campaign is led by the World Coalition against the Death Penalty.

More executions in Iraq

On April 2013, 21 executions were carried out in Iraq. They bring the number of persons executed in 2013 to 50. In 2012 there were at least 129 executions in Iraq.

Among the 1400 prisoners on death row, about 150 are believed to be at imminent risk of execution.

Two more executions in Japan

On 26 April 2013 two more executions were carried out in Japan. They bring the total of executions for this year to five, while 130 people remain on death row.

Executions in Saudi Arabia

On 9 April 2013 Talal Bin Fayez Al Shammari was executed bringing the number of executions for this year to a total of 31.

Kuwait resumes executions

On April 1 2013, three men were executed in Kuwait. They were the first executions since May 2007.
