ICDP and the 5th World Congress against the Death Penalty, 12-15 June 2013

ICDP’s delegation was led by its President Federico Mayor and included Commissioners Robert Badinter, Hanne Sophie Greve and Rodolfo Mattarollo.

In addition to participating in Roundtables and Workshops ICDP’s delegation had a number of bilateral meetings and gave numerous media interviews. See attached Report.

International Network of Academics for the Abolition of Capital Punishment's preparatory conference for the 5th World Congress against the Death Penalty, Madrid.

The International Network of Academics for the Abolition of Capital Punishment has organized a conference on 11 June to prepare for the 5th World Congress against the Death Penalty, Madrid 12-15 June 2013.

The one day preparatory conference in Madrid brought together academics, activists and politicians to discuss a range of death penalty issues including a moratorium on executions, deterrent effect of the death penalty, new approaches to the right to life and human cruelty in art.

The International Commission against the Death Penalty participated to this preparatory conference. ICDP President Federico Mayor spoke in the opening session, Mr. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, honorary member of ICDP, chaired the roundtable "The death sentence as cruel and inhuman punishment: cruelty in international jurisprudence and national Courts".

Roundtable "Belarus - Religion and Death Penalty", Minsk, 21 June 2013


The Council of Europe organised a roundtable on ‘ Belarus - Religion and Death Penalty’ in Minsk on 21 June 2013 as part of the discussions to advance abolition of the death penalty with the authorities of the government of Belarus. The roundtable sought to further discussion on the death penalty through an exchange of views among clergy, representatives of national institutions, civil society and international experts.  ICDP Commissioner Hanne Sophie Greve participated as an international expert and presented a paper entitled  "The human being created ‘in the image of God".

Nigeria resumes executions after 7 years

Four men were hanged in Benin City Prison in Edo State on 24 June 2013. A fifth man is reportedly at imminent risk of execution. These are the first executions since 2006. There are reportedly more than 1000 prisoners on death row.
