Geomagnetic Disturbance Alert

Geomagnetic Disturbance Alert

17th February 2023

British Geological Survey

A series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have left the Sun during the last week and an increase in geomagnetic activity is expected over the next few days.

Isolated periods of enhanced geomagnetic activity have already been observed over the past few days and the most recent CMEs are expected to arrive later today (17th February). STORM conditions are anticipated to follow and activity levels could remain high over the weekend.

Assuming clear dark skies, there is an increased chance of seeing the aurora during local night time hours, particularly in the North of Scotland.
