Geomagnetic Disturbance Alert

Geomagnetic Disturbance Alert

28th April 2022

British Geological Survey

Assuming clear dark skies, there is an increased chance of seeing the aurora on 29th and 30th April. In the UK, those in Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland may have the best opportunities.

This is due to the expected increased disturbance in the Earth’s magnetic field (known as a geomagnetic STORM) as a result of a coronal hole high-speed wind stream, combined with an Earth-directed Coronal Mass Ejection or CME. The CME launched from the Sun on Wednesday, 27th April and will cause geomagnetic disturbance on 29th and 30th April.
