Dear MRPC commissioners and technical members,
The end of the year is often an opportune time to give to your favorite charities. As you consider your year-end gifts, we hope you consider joining me in donating to the Mississippi River Parkway Commission’s Endowment Fund, housed at the Greater Dubuque Area Community Foundation. We are supported there by former MRPC Commissioner from Iowa, MJ Smith.
The endowment provides an annual payout that the MRPC board can direct to spark an initiative or meet a special need. In 2016, the endowment helped underwrite a Study Committee that defined five new zoning restrictions on silica sand mining along the Iowa Great River Road in Clayton County.
The flexibility in how one chooses to be charitable creates an array of options for donors. Donations can be cash, stock, real estate, or personal items like fine art.
Should you have a one-time event, like sale of a business, stocks, or property, a large bonus or other event that creates exposure to a large tax liability, charitable giving can be a way to do good for MRPC, while reducing your contributions to the IRS... legally! Gifts of appreciated stock or real estate, as well as rolling over your IRA, or IRA Minimum Annual Distribution can all provide substantial tax advantages. Gifts that generate personal income are even possible.
Entering the holiday season, we wish you great times with your family and friends, and encourage everyone to be charitable and engaged citizens in their state and national Commission.
