DAV MN Outdoors Boundary Waters Trip

The DAV of MN Outdoors Program recently returned from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area trip, bringing 5 veterans to Minnesota’s premiere canoe and camping resource. The group consisted of veterans from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan from all service branches, some of whom had never been canoed before. Without ever meeting one another prior to the trip, the group embarked on a 4 day trip with a mile long portage and a 3.8 miles paddle, carrying and transporting everything they needed to survive the trip. From their selected campsite, the group began to make camp and enjoy the fishing.

Everyone took on roles to assist with the success of the trip to include gathering, cutting, and splitting woods, cooking, and cleaning, and of course fishing. With only one slight rainfall, the weather was beautiful the fish were biting and so were the mosquitos. The four days in the wilderness built a strong bond between the group as they had to rely on one another make a successful and enjoyable trip. In the end, friends were made, stories were told, and the fish stories got bigger and bigger.

DAV Chapter 23 Kolstad Award Scholarships

Mariah Donofrio (center), granddaughter of Kolstad member Ken Tabor was the recipient of the 1st ever Richard Chopp Scholarship ($500).  Sue Marcucci, Richard Chopp’s sister (right) presented the scholarship with a very nice memorial speech at our July meeting.  Ross Toole, Kolstad Chapter 23 Commander is pictured left.  Sue was honored that we asked her to present the award and is willing to present one each year if she is available.

Richard Obidowski (right), Chapter 23 member accepts the 2nd   scholarship award, (which we are able to do because of our clothing drives) for his grandson Nicholas Marolt from Commander Ross Toole. (Also $500)

A 3rd award of $500 will be going out this fall to Chapter 23 member Al Oferosky.
During each home game, the Minnesota Lynx along with Disabled American Veterans of Minnesota will honor local female veterans as part of our Homegrown Heroes Program. Click on the Lynx to view the Veterans that have been honored!
