Women for the Mediterranean: Driving Force for development and stability
Women for Mediterranean
The 2016 Euro-Mediterranean context and increasing challenges lead more than ever to address cultural, security and development issues in an integrated manner. First affected by economic crisis, climate change, as well as conflicts, violence and discriminations, women are also enablers and actors for positive changes. They foster sustainable development and inclusive economic growth, they nurture education and health and they promote mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.
In order to discuss these current and pressing issues, the Union for the Mediterranean will hold its third edition of the High-Level Conference on Women Empowerment on the 10th and 11th of October. The Conference will highlight why and how women play a fundamental role in promoting peace, development and stability. Participants will share ideas, experiences, initiatives and recommendations to transform commitments into concrete actions.
This year, participants will take part in the following sessions:
Women as a driver for sustainable development and inclusive growth
Women as key actors against extremism and radicalization
Women, mobility and migration

Advancing the Gender Equality Agenda in the Mediterranean region
Following the last Ministerial Declaration on Strengthening the Role of Women in Society in Paris in 2013 and in order to prepare the 4th Ministerial Conference, the UfM has initiated a Regional Dialogue on Women’s Empowerment.
Launched in 2015, the Regional Dialogue involves UfM Member States and international organisations, civil society and private sector representatives. The working groups have worked on the elaboration of recommendations on 4 priorities:
  • − Raise women’s participation in economic life.
  • − Improve women’s access to leadership and decision making positions.
  • − Combat violence against women and gender-based-violence.
  • − Change of stereotypes through education and culture.
