In Memoriam:  Hiro Ichikawa

March 23, 1959 - January 6, 2017
We are deeply heartbroken - along with many others - to lose our good friend and fellow artist, Hiro Ichikawa. When David and I first came to Beacon several years ago we were introduced to Hiro's ethereal art work at RiverWinds Gallery where he was having a show. Later, when I opened TheoGanz Studio, I asked Hiro - who was also an accomplished print maker - to curate an exhibition of prints (Prints Without Pixels); this gave me the opportunity to watch and learn from his example about installations, attention to details and generally, how things could/should be done in a professional manner. Also, maybe most importantly for me, was the opportunity to see his calm, steady and unassuming personality come shining through.  Hiro's own paintings were in many, many of our group shows and we were honored to feature his paintings in a solo exhibition, In-Between, in December 2014. In the photograph above, which taken on the opening night, December 13, 2014, Hiro is standing in front of his diptych, Sprites.  We thought you might like, perhaps, to see several installation shots of this exhibition; two of the largest paintings - Launch and Ascent - were painted specifically for this space.     Eleni Smolen, 1/19/17
