Letter from the President

Special thanks are extended to Lisa Coster, President, Coster Communications, Ltd., and many others for their leadership and expertise in conducting the judging for the 2016 PRSA Oklahoma City Uppercase Award nominations. Each year, PRSA chapters throughout the country conduct annual chapter award reciprocal judging; however, due to scheduling factors, the 2016 Best in Maryland award entries were judged by the PRSA Philadelphia chapter. We appreciate the support of our City of Brotherly Love PRSA chapter and look forward to celebrating with this year’s Best in Maryland award recipients on December 8. Susan Goldberg and Barbara Clapp to lead Best in Maryland Awards Gala on Dec. 8

“We are thrilled and honored that Ms. Goldberg is supporting our chapter by serving as this year’s keynote speaker,” said Dan Dunne, president of PRSA Maryland. “She is a remarkable person with a distinguished career in journalism.” In her speech, Goldberg will discuss how National Geographic magazine navigates the dynamic field of digital media. Dan said, “Her insights will provide Baltimore’s communication professionals with new opportunities to remain on top of their game.”

Hundreds of professional communicators will gather at the event to recognize award-winning communications and celebrate the chapter’s 55th anniversary.

“This year’s gala will be one of the chapter’s premier events,” said Dan. “With Ms. Clapp as the emcee, an elegant venue, fabulous speakers, and numerous award recipients, there is no better way to celebrate another successful year in Maryland public relations and communications.”

Member Focus:  Kelly A. Stoll

WebNotes turns the spotlight on member Kelly A. Stoll, a Senior Strategic Communications Specialist for AECOM and PRSA Maryland board member and treasurer. Kelly discusses her role at AECOM and why she decided to work in public relations.

Job title and description:  Senior Strategic Communications Specialist at AECOM. AECOM is an engineering firm that designs, builds, finances, operates and manages projects around the world. A group of communicators, most with agency backgrounds, functions as a boutique PR firm within the larger corporation making highly technical information easily understandable to communities and stakeholders.

Why did you choose a career in communications/PR?  I started as a business major in college and after my first accounting class, I was certain I was not going to do well working on spreadsheets for a living. I was fortunate enough to have talked to family friends and work associates of my parents. That is when I discovered public relations.

Vitamin Provides 3 Takeaways from Coffee With Session

"As public relations professionals, our job is to protect our clients and maintain good relationships with the media," states the opening of a blog post on Vitamin's website. "But often times, we find ourselves in situations where those two things are at odds with each other. If a reporter is pushing to interview you or your client about a negative or controversial story, how do you turn down the opportunity and still maintain a good rapport with the reporter?"

On October 5, Vitamin hosted a “Coffee With” session for PRSA Maryland members. “After racking our brain for a few weeks, we decided that our group discussion should focus on how to navigate difficult conversations with the media," the blog post continues. Here are the three biggest takeaways as noted by Vitamin...Keep reading.

PRSA Maryland thanks Vitamin for hosting this Coffee With session. The Coffee With series is a casual gathering (lasting 60-90 minutes) where a firm will host a discussion about what its agency is doing that will lead into a bigger group discussion about the PR industry. This is a great opportunity to network, ask questions and share ideas.

Is your firm interested in hosting a future Coffee With? If so, please contact Emily McDermott at 410.568.8814 or
