Vision Prep Friends,

On behalf of our administrative team, I would like to introduce the Vision Preparatory Charter School staff for the 2014-2015 school year. These hard-working teachers, led by Dr. Megan Salemi and Sonja Jones, began professional development on Monday, July 7th, and will continue training for the next three weeks.  Some of the important topics being addressed are: culture norming, core values/common language and curriculum mapping.  Their commitment to excellence will ensure an efficient and effective start to our first day of school. Please read through the bios found below.

Lauren Braden (Lead Teacher-1st Grade) is a Memphis native and attended both public and private schools as a child. Ms. Braden kept with her Memphis roots by attending the University of Memphis where she earned her Bachelors in Education for Elementary K-6 and Special Education: Mild to Moderate Disabilities K-12 in 2012.  Following graduation in 2012, Ms. Braden moved closer to her extended family and taught 4th grade math and writing in Owensboro, KY.  Ms. Braden also comes with experience as an Instructional Assistant for primary grades 1st-3rd grade with emphasis on Reading and Math.  Ms. Braden will be teaching 1st grade at Vision Preparatory for the 2014-15 school year. 
Rebecca Copeland (Music Teacher) received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Maranatha Baptist Bible College.  She taught kindergarten and first and second grade until she had two girls of her own.  She is a piano teacher with more than 15 years experience. She loves young children and music and enjoys using her gifts to teach children about music.  Ms. Copeland is actively involved in the music ministry and children's ministry of Central Church.  She currently teaches Kindermusik with Ms. Annette Morris; Ms. Morris' studio, "Kindermusik with Ms. Annette and Friends" is currently serving over 20 independent and private schools in the Memphis area. She loves to spend time with her husband and two daughters, reading, going to movies and shopping.
Temecka Curtis (Lead Teacher-1st Grade) is a graduate of the Department of  Educational Studies at the University of Tennessee at Martin. She began teaching in Memphis, TN about seventeen years ago as a kindergarten teacher. Since then she's taught first grade, fourth grade, and served as a school librarian in both the public and private school sectors. Mrs. Curtis is passionate about students learning and inspiring them to try new things; she is extremely excited to be teaching at Vision Prep.
Erica Gonzales (Lead Teacher-Kindergarten) was born and raised in Memphis, TN. She attended The University of Memphis and graduated with a degree in Liberal Studies. She later attended Christian Brothers University and graduated with a Master's Degree in elementary education, including eighteen hours of post graduate coursework in special education. Ms. Gonzales has taught abroad, receiving her TESOL(Teaching English as a Second Language) certification in Barcelona, Spain and teaching Kindergarten and First Grade students in Nairobi, Kenya. This upcoming school year is going to be rewarding in several respects and she is highly anticipating many wonderful experiences for our students at Vision Prep! 
Tavieya Harris (Teacher Assistant-1st Grade) is a native Memphian and graduate of Wooddale High School, where she ranked in the top 10 percent of her class. Upon receiving a full academic scholarship to the University of Memphis, she enrolled and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. Since graduation, Ms. Harris has gained experience with charter schools by working for Star Academy and the Achievement School District.  She brings to Vision Prep an array of knowledge and the desire to see students exceed all expectations. 
Chrystal Hayes (Lead Teacher-1st Grade) is a native of Memphis, Tennessee. After attending Philips Exeter Academy, Governor’s School for Perspective Teachers, and the Summer Writing Program at Carleton College she graduated valedictorian of the inaugural class of Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Early Childhood Education.  After graduating from college, Ms. Hayes taught 4th and 5th grade science and social studies at W.E.B. DuBois Arts and Technology Elementary. Ms. Hayes believes that teachers do not only teach but also inspire minds, fuel imaginations, and empower the future. Most of all, Ms. Hayes’ dream is to share and foster her love for learning in order to create other life-long learners. Besides loving to teach, Ms. Hayes also enjoys reading, traveling, cooking, and crafting.

 
Angelo Jones (P.E. Teacher) is a Memphis native and graduated from Overton High School in 1996. He enrolled in Lane College in 1997 and received a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry in 2001. Mr. Jones has worked as an analytical bench chemist for Cargill, Buckman Laboratories, and Shering-Plough. After a successful career in chemistry, Mr. Jones decided to fulfill his love for sports by becoming a youth counselor for Memphis Athletic Ministries. This position led him to become an assistant coach at Southwest Tennessee Community College. Currently, Mr. Jones works part-time as the head assistant coach for Memphis Catholic High School and for Shelby County Schools. Mr. Jones's desire is to teach students the importance of health and wellness by motivating students physically, instilling good morals, and promoting healthy eating habits.
Meeae King (Lead Teacher-Kindergarten) was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.  She received her B.S. in marketing at DePaul University in 2002.  While working at an independent school in Chicago, she decided to pursue her passion and attained her Master's in elementary education at DePaul University in 2006.  She has since worked for 6 years in the classroom with experience in 8th grade, 1st grade and 4th grade in addition to being a reading specialist.  She has two little boys and lives with her husband in midtown.  She is very excited about teaching at Vision Prep and is looking forward to getting to know all the students and families in her classroom.
Neva Reaves (Lead Teacher-Kindergarten) is a native of Champaign, Illinois and a product of Champaign county public schools. Neva Reaves has a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from California State University. She is currently finishing her Masters of Science in Elementary Education from Indiana University. For the past four years she has taught kindergarten at New Hope Christian Academy in Memphis, TN. She is married to Henry E. Reaves III and they have five beautiful children. In her spare time she loves to read!
Maria Lane (Receptionist) is a native of Memphis, TN and has over 15 years of administrative experience. She previously worked at New Hope Christian Academy as the office assistant for the junior kindergarten campus. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to music and collecting “I Love Lucy” memorabilia. Ms. Lane is excited about joining the Vision Prep family. 
Tamika Woods (Teacher Assistant-Kindergarten) is a native Memphian, where she was raised in the Coro Lake/Westwood community. She attended Double Tree Montessori School and graduated from Westwood High School in 1994. She is an alumni of State Technical Institute of Memphis and LeMoyne-Owen College where she studied Information Technology & Business Administration. Mrs. Woods is an entrepreneur and has several years of experience in Human Resource Management. Her educational experience includes Owner/Director of Woods Family Childcare, Director of Aftercare/Substitute Teacher at New Hope Christian Academy, Master Tutor at City University Boys Preparatory School and director of Blossoming Beauties Summer Camp. Mrs. Woods is joining the Vision Prep family because she believes in the school's mission to prepare children for college through a rigorous elementary education.

Vision Prep Parent Update!

Registration Period is OPEN!
Registration paperwork can be completed at Miracle Temple Ministries (3750 Millbranch Rd.) Monday-Friday between 9am-2pm. You may complete it onsite or pickup paperwork and return it at a later date.

Parents must bring a copy of the following:

  • Student's birth certificate
  • Student's social security card
  • Student's shot record (TN Immunization Certificate showing that child has required shots for K-6th grade)
  • 2 Documents showing proof of residence (MLGW bill, driver's license, lease agreement, government benefits letter, voter registration card, bank statement, paystub, mortgage statement, property tax letter) 
  • Copy of K report card (rising 1st grade only)
  • Copy of IEP or 504 plan if student is receiving special education services

Uniform Reminder
If your child hasn't been fitted for his/her free uniform, please contact Fashioned 2 Fit to schedule a fitting appointment. Also, be reminded that uniform orders placed after July 1st will not be ready be the first day of school (August 4th). Contact Fashioned 2 Fit for estimated delivery times on backordered items. Fashioned 2 Fit is located on 3427 Park Ave and can be reached at 901-624-9366.

Parent Meeting Reminder
Parent meetings are held Monday-Friday between 2pm-4pm. Parent meetings are mandatory and students will not be allowed to register unless the parent meeting is completed. Call Sonja Jones or Maria Lane at 901-488-4310 for scheduling.  

Vision Prep Partnerships

The Memphis community is supporting Vision Prep through strong partnerships. In June, we were surprised by Mrs. Courtenay White with Vision Prep cookies designed by Mad Lily Cakery (www.madlily.com)!
