LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care News

Greetings to everyone from Val's LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care

Half of 2020 is almost over which is really hard to fathom. It has certainly been an interesting year to date, with many challenges for all, but also some interesting opportunities for us to connect in different ways, which includes providing information and support to both providers and older LGBTI people.

With no end of COVID-19 in sight, we'd just like to reiterate the importance of supporting our LGBTI community. We again encourage individuals, workplaces, services and programs to consider ways in which you can step-up and demonstrate to LGBTI consumers, staff, and the community more broadly that you are committed to inclusion, take a stand against discrimination, and/or provide messages of welcome to those needing assistance and care.

Over the coming months we will continue to plan, develop and provide some new resources and education opportunities that can assist in the development or consolidation of LGBTI inclusive care and support in your service. Of course this means more online content and education - we hope to provide a series of webinars as well as an online forum later in the year. So keep an eye out for these and more. We provide regular updates via social media - the COVID period has certainly enabled us to access and participate in webinars and content from all over the world - so sign up to our Facebook page for these updates and opportunities. Some of our resource development with LGBTI elders has stalled due to social distancing, however we will endeavour to move these forward once it is safe to do so.

Launch
Rainbow Health Victoria - Pride in Prevention Evidence Guide
Join Rainbow Health Victoria next Wednesday 1 July for the launch of Pride in Prevention Evidence Guide, a guide to primary prevention of family violence experienced by LGBTIQ communities. The event will be opened by Gabrielle Williams, Minister for Prevention of Family Violence, and Ro Allen, the Commissioner for Gender and Sexuality, with a panel discussion of partner organisations and others well-placed to speak to developing shared vision of ending all forms of family violence. More information and to register here

As we continue to navigate COVID-19 including the ever-changing restrictions, we will adapt our interaction as needed. Until we can all meet again - face-to-face or online - stay safe and keep up the amazing work and support you provide to LGBTI elders!
