Val's LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care
LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care News
Since our last news we have definitely moved into more difficult and challenging times with the Covid pandemic, and no place more than in the ageing and aged care sector. We'd like to acknowledge the situation occurring in Victoria, and recognise the range of complex issues but also the efforts being taken by many to protect, care and support older people in the community and in care environments. There is much debate about what should have occurred, what needs to be done, what's best/bad practice, and lots of finger pointing, but there are no simple solutions to this complex situation. A media statement yesterday from the president of the Australian Association of Gerontologists provides some insight - read here.

Val's would like to thank aged care and health staff for the work they do and care they provide to older people, including LGBTI elders. Many organisations have stepped up to continue to assist the vulnerable including older people who may be experiencing difficult times due to the pandemic and the extended lockdown in Victoria. And a special thanks to those services reaching out to older LGBTI people in innovative ways. As a community we recognise that many older Victorians are experiencing extreme fear and prolonged isolation so please continue to look for ways to safely connect and and provide support during these unprecedented times. There are links below to programs and organisations providing assistance.

We hope that the situation quickly improves and please don't hesitate to contact Val's if we can provide any assistance or information regarding the care and support of older LGBTI people. Stay safe and take care.

No use-by date
A range of new video resources have been released that explore the often taboo subject of older people, intimacy and sexuality. The No Use-by Date videos provide a rich overview of sexual attitudes and behaviours, and the diverse older participants describe the type of interactions they seek with health and care providers. There are currently 9 videos in the series which are freely available via You Tube. The videos are a great educational resource for staff and you can find

Community Visitor Programs
Are you aware of the range of community visitors programs available to support older LGBTI people? The LGBTI visitors programs are working really hard to ensure ongoing support during the pandemic but we know there are many more LGBTI elders who continue to experience isolation and loneliness. Please help spread the word or if you are aware of anyone who might like a virtual visitor during this period and beyond, here are links to the programs:
