LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care News

Greetings to everyone from Val's LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care

This Sunday 17 May 2020 is IDAHOBIT Day - International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism & Transphobia. On 17 May 1990 the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases, so this year marks 30 years since WHO declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder.

During this period more than ever it is important we show support and solidarity to our LGBTI community. Even while we are all experiencing changes and restrictions in our lives due to COVID-19, we encourage workplaces, services and programs, to consider ways in which you can step-up and demonstrate to consumers, staff, and the community more broadly that you support LGBTI inclusion and take a stand against discrimination.

There are a multitude of ways to show support and celebrate - and although we are still in lock down, consider ways in which you might celebrate IDAHOBIT Day, either over the next few days, on Sunday of course, or throughout next week.  Of course may things may be virtual/online - but be creative - think about ways of demonstrating support, utilise your website, fly a flag, bake a rainbow cake, host a rainbow zoom get together and more. You might also choose to join in with or promote a range of activities and celebrations occurring throughout the community - we have included a few links below and highlighted some activities and events but there are many more occurring so do a search on social media etc.

More than ever it is really important to show our support - particularly for older LGBTI people in the community, so please join in and celebrate IDAHOBIT Day 2020.

As always, stay safe and keep up the amazing work and support you provide!
