LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care News

Happy spring everyone, what a year it's been so far. Like everyone in Victoria we are so pleased that Covid rates have fallen significantly due to community efforts and sacrifice. It really seems like we can feel the sunshine again both literally and metaphorically.

Across the board it has certainly been a difficult few months, and nowhere more that within the aged care sector - both community and residential aged care. We know there is still a long way to go and that we must continue to work together to ensure the safety of everyone in the community and particularly older people, but we need to congratulate the efforts of the sector to provide amazing care and support to people under very difficult circumstances.

Val's is currently in the process of finalising a wonderful range of events and the release of a new resources to further assist services providers to improve the care and support they provide to older LGBTI people and to help services become LGBTI-culturally safe and inclusive. Watch out over the next few weeks for more e-news with invitation to a series of online events, launches and educational opportunities - a Val's online series - all are welcome. There are lots of other events happening in the sector - see throughout this newsletter.

Finally thanks to all the services providers who have worked so tirelessly to keep older people safe and connected, and particularly our LGBTI elders. Many of you have reached out to link LGBTI consumers to services, supports and information to assist them during this difficult period. Stay safe and take care.

International Day Older Persons

1 October is Int. Day of Older Persons, and the start of what is usually the very vibrant Victorian Seniors Festival. While this year the festival is being delivered in a range of creative ways (click photo for more), we are calling on all service providers to celebrate 1 October and the festival with activities that are not only LGBTI inclusive but also relevant. Be creative and provide some rainbow content throughout your online programs. More than ever be welcoming to LGBTI seniors - some ideas included here
