The Madagascar Journals

The Madagascar Journals is an 8-episode series about travel in Southern Africa—real travel, featuring the parts television typically leaves out.

Like when your bank suspends your credit card because it notices you bought a pretzel in Berlin during a stopover; or when you can’t enjoy anything you’re seeing because you’re pining for the girlfriend you left back home; or when, after painstakingly drinking only bottled water, you forget and brush your teeth using the tap.
Boredom, loneliness, irrational fear, halting conversations via English-Malagasy dictionary, malaria that turns out to be flu, countless hours of waiting at bush taxi queues, bad directions that lead to interesting discoveries, bathing out of a bucket….
Presumably, those parts are left out of most travel narratives because they aren’t interesting enough, and yet boredom and trivial mishaps are the most universal elements of travel; practically the only things every adventure has in common.
Perhaps if we told our travel stories not as adventures in which we’re the heroes, but mis-adventures in which we’re relatable human characters, Americans wouldn’t be so intimidated by travel off the beaten track.

Matt Kresling is a documentarian and visual effects artist from Northern California. His favorite mis-adventures include a summer in Bulgaria, the train across Siberia, and the time he disrupted the U.S. Supreme Court.
