What a Rebirth of Independent Pharmacies Could Do For Rural America

In a feature for The American Conservative, Stacy Mitchell and Charlie Thaxton look at how independent pharmacies could flourish and multiply, helping to solve the growing problem of healthcare deserts — if only policymakers would stand up to the big players in the drug industry. 

The article is told through the story of Ben Okafor, an immigrant who opened an independent pharmacy three years ago in a remote corner of rural Maine. Okafor’s story shows how local pharmacies outperform the chains, offering lower prices and better care. 

His story also shows the forces that are shuttering local pharmacies — including how giants like CVS are using their ownership of key players in the healthcare market to slash insurance reimbursements to independent pharmacies.
