Hello friends,

We’re excited to announce that ILSR has joined with business leaders and entrepreneurs from across the country to launch Small Business Rising, a campaign calling on policymakers to break up monopoly power and safeguard the right of independent businesses to compete and serve the needs of their communities.

The launch was featured this morning in the Wall Street Journal

Monopoly power is the single biggest threat facing independent businesses. It takes many forms: Amazon’s stranglehold on the online market, the exorbitant fees charged by Visa and Mastercard, Walmart’s ability to muscle special discounts from suppliers that aren’t available to local grocers — to name just a few.

America’s monopoly problem can be traced to the 1980s, when policymakers on both the right and left relaxed rules that had kept corporations from amassing too much market power and using it to thwart their smaller competitors.

Today, there’s a growing effort in Congress to restore our antitrust laws to their original strength and purpose. Small Business Rising is building a united voice of small businesses — rural and urban;  Black, brown, and white; newly opened and long-established — to push for these changes.

We hope you'll add your voice by joining the campaign

Small Business Rising is a joint project of more than 20 national and local independent business organizations representing more than 60,000 independent businesses. Partners include the American Booksellers Association, American Independent Business Alliance, Main Street Alliance, National Grocers Association, and many others. Contact us to learn more about becoming a partner.

Earlier this year, these organizations collaborated to host a lively antimonopoly town hall that featured Rep. David Cicilline and drew nearly 400 independent businesses. Small Business Rising builds on this momentum and will play a critical role in helping lawmakers and the public understand how failed antitrust policies are harming people and communities across the country.

Small Business Rising is calling for policymakers to:
  • Stop tech monopolies, such as Amazon, from cornering the online market by breaking them up and regulating them.
  • Block dominant corporations from engaging in abusive tactics by making the antitrust laws stronger and easier to enforce.
  • Adopt bright-line rules outlawing mega-mergers and setting a higher bar for allowing other mergers, including vertical acquisitions.
  • Establish rules to create a level playing field, promote competition, and spur innovation.
It’s time to stand up — you can join us here!

(And please share widely!)

Thank you!
