World Interiors Day 2013: Your Celebration (part 2)



Two full months after this year’s World Interiors Day celebration (WID), we are thrilled to continue to receive your reports showcasing your celebrations. The IFI Executive Board, Secretariat and I thank you and congratulate you for your wonderful initiatives, commitment and energy spent in the service and promotion of the Interiors profession.

Following is a second installment of the showcase of your programs for WID 2013. In these updates, we continue to feature a short and select alphabetical (by association acronym) snapshot of your celebrations around the world. Please note that this material is shared with you in the order of receipt of your material. Our next and final PU on this subject will recap programs from members who celebrated WID 2013 by adopting both World Interiors Day and the Interiors Declaration.


United Arab Emirates


AGU (Al Ghurair University)
AGU A heartfelt coming together took place at Al Ghurair University not only to celebrate WID but also an opportunity for the faculty to meet successful graduates after they have left the shelter of the university. The evening started off with a keynote from Dr. Wael Rashdan and led to an interaction with the alumni and the existing students, who shared their experiences of the outside world, the latest design trends and the expectations emerging among the design industry for budding designers.


United Arab Emirates


APID (Association of Professional Interior Designers)
The Department of Interior Design & Architecture, Manipal University in collaboration with APID held an exhibition to celebrate World Interiors Day which included design projects, models, live furniture created by the students and also documentation of the Department’s design event, “Dezine - Konnect 2013”, which was based on “Architectural Heritage of the U.A.E & Photography”.




BDIA (Bund Deutscher Innenarchitekten)
BDIAThe BDIA has moved from Bonn to Berlin! To commemorate the move and World Interiors Day, the new BDIA Yearbook Interior Architecture 2013/2014 was released. The new issue presents with 23 selected current projects the impressive spectrum of good interior architecture made in Germany. One focus of the publication is a classic challenge for interior architects and designers: the revitalization, restoration and conservation of buildings in combination with modern requirements on all levels.


Hong Kong


HKIDA (Hong Kong Interior Design Association)
HKIDATo celebrate World Interiors Day 2013, HKIDA launched a video summarizing the fruitful events initiated from WID 2012. In response to last year’s theme of “Finding the New in the Old”, the HKIDA initiated a public forum entitled “Dialogue with Designers” which allowed interaction between public, designers and students, was also held at the exhibition opening. The exhibition was a great success, attracting over 2 million visitors. This video provided a fabulous highlight to the series of WID-inspired events.




IEU (Izmir University of Economics)
IEUThe Interior Design department at Izmir University of Economics celebrated WID day with a two day trip to the Kale Factories in Canakkale, Turkey. Students where shown the production, development and design phases of ceramic and acrylic product production in one of the largest factories of its kind in the world. In the end the group celebrated World Interiors Day with a cake and a trip that was as tasty as that cake.


South Africa


IID (South African Institute of the Interior Design Professions)
IID kicked off World Interiors Day by showcasing a first-come-first-served exhibition of student work from all five years of study and included a display of services and products from corporate members. The celebration included a champagne and cocktail meet-and-greet with practicing designers and suppliers throughout the day.




MIID (Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers)
To celebrate the World Interiors Day MIID organized and officiated a three events related with interior design profession and education. Students were invited to a lecture by Mr. Ronnie Choong, the President of MIID, who opened an exhibition showcasing work done by students of KBU International College. MIID also hosted a Professional Insightful Sharing Session at The One Academy of Communication Design where Mr. Choong gave a career sharing talk to young designers. The final event was a key note lecture as part of MIID REKA sessions, featuring Prof. Alesandro Biamonti. Who shared his contemporary view of Interior Design.




SMI (Sociedad Mexicana De Interioristas, A.C.)
SMI celebrated WID with a great event at the renowned Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara/ UNICO, hosting 500 specialized professionals. Three outstanding lectures were presented by some of the best interior designers; D.I. Mayra Cobian, who talked about furniture making. D.I. Libertad Arceaga and D.I. Marisol Tafich talking about the challenges and solutions they faced in some important projects.




TOBB ETU (TOBB University of Economics and Technology)
TOBB ETU commemorated World Interiors Day by hosting a design workshop. Prof. Dr. Nur Ayalp made a presentation, introducing the Interior Architecture profession and the continued work of IFI. All faculty members, students at TOBB ETU and many high school students from various schools in the area attended and took part in the workshop that provided a point of view of design education urging all to explore the role of Interior Architecture/Design in society, culture and our future environments.
