Supporting the creative sector
In this month's editorial I want to specifically talk about upcoming funding.
We've been advised of additional flood and bushfire recovery funding from the NSW Government through the Create NSW Arts and Cultural Assests Program specifically for restoration, replacement and betterment of infrastructure that was damaged in the severe weather and flooding that happened between February and June 2022 (note this is only for events up to June 2022, not events this financial year). This is open to impacted not-for-profit organisations and councils in the LGAs of Cabonne, Cowra, Lithgow, Mid-Western, Oberon and Parkes. Arts OutWest can assist organisations to apply or we can apply as a Funds Administrator for projects in our region. Funding overview details are here and applications closes 22 May 2023. Please get in touch if you think you could be eligible. We'll continue to advocate for arts funding support for those more recently impacted by natural disasters.
The Australian Government's Regional Arts Fund (administered by RANSW) will open on July 3 and closes Monday, 14 August 2023. RAF Project Grants will fund high-quality arts projects benefitting regional or remote artists, arts workers, audiences and communities. The focus of the project could include any area of creative practice, multiple art forms or cross-disciplinary practice. Please contact me for advice or assistance in applying.
At Arts OutWest we'll soon open our Rescue Restart Micro Grants for flood and disaster impacted people and communities - just waiting on some funding approval at our end. We'll email out as soon as these open.
If you want to learn more about 'The Fickle World of Funding' that is this month's Conversations with the CEO with Regional Arts NSW's Tracey Callinan. Catch it here. You'll find more current funding rounds in the funding section of the enews below.
On the staffing front: Christine McMillan is currently on long-service leave, back at the end of June. While Christine is away, Steven Cavanagh is working four days a week mostly on Arts & Health projects. Kate Smith has also returned to AOW after taking some leave to work on Fast Cars. Kate works two days a week on Arts & Health projects. Lauren Carlson, who joined us last year, is doing extra hours assisting with admin and communications. Maryanne Jaques is still with communications, working three school-hour days a week. Aleshia Lonsdale is our full-time Aboriginal Arts Development Officer and Kathy Weekes manages our finances 1 day per week.
Thanks to everyone who has adapted to our new system of DIY listings at our What's On. If you haven't tried it yet here's info on what you need to do.
What are you reading? I've just finished the Bathurst Writers’ & Readers’ Festival Great Festival Read book Iris by Fiona Kelly McGregor in preparation for the discussion and panel at the festival. This year sessions will be held in the Bathurst library as well as at BMEC. It is worth checking the website for venue and registration info. There are some wonderful live sessions with local and guest speakers as well as sessions streamed from the Sydney Writers Festival. SWF sessions will also be streamed into Orange and Mudgee (See our What's On for details).
Arts OutWest are also supporting, with some funds from the NSW Government's Rescue and Restart, the theatre production Euphoria at the Union Theatre Lithgow on May 6 (details below). I highly recommend it.

LEAD STORY
Yaganda Bulabul Art Project at Bloomfield
A collaborative arts project to create healing environments working with the Infant Child Youth Family Mental Health Unit (ICYFMHU) is underway at Bloomfield campus (Orange) in the redeveloped Yaganda Bulabul Building.
ICYFMH contacted Arts OutWest in 2022 to develop a unified artistic concept using the Three Rivers to link spaces and the flow of people and movement through the In-Patient (IPU) and Community Mental Health (CMH) units. Through consultations and workshops, the project aims to create a culturally appropriate, welcoming and safe environment for young people ranging in age from infants to adolescence. Six commissioned artists will create mural artworks that generate a sense of hope and change. The works will be installed throughout May and June. Read more about the project

WATCH: Duo Smith & Jones teamed up with artist Todd Fuller and director Adam Deusien (Lingua Franca) - and a hundreds of community contributors - to make this beautiful animated film clip for 'Home'.
The backstory: In May 2021 Smith & Jones and Adam Deusien were asked to create a musical response to a visual art installation at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery called Hardenvale, which is both a celebration and a farewell to the Australian suburban landscape of the previous mid-century. What followed was the creation of the track ‘Home’; a rootsy, acoustic guitar driven song (featuring upright bass by Jon Wilby), recorded completely live by long-time collaborator and producer Kris Schubert at The Boatshed in O’Connell in July 2021. The clip and single were released at BRAG on 6 April 2023. Duration: 2.50
