The MNA offices will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, next Thursday and Friday, November 26-27. MNA will reopen on Monday, November 30 at 8:30 a.m.

IMPORTANT: Notify MNA of Changes to Holiday Publication Schedules


With the Christmas and New Year holidays approaching, some newspapers may alter their publication schedules. Please notify MNA (612-332-8844 or advertising@mna.org) in advance of any changes, as they could potentially affect proposed advertising placement campaigns.

2016 MNA Advertising Rate Questionnaire Due December 4!


The 
MNA Advertising Rate Questionnaire has been updated for 2016 and includes expanded sections on Display advertising, TMC/Shoppers, Pre-Prints, Insert shipping, and Online. The rates you provide are used by our Media Buyers to generate rate quotes and place insertion orders with your publication. To ensure we have current information for your newspaper, please fill out the questionnaire completely and return it to MNA by Friday, December 4 via fax or email as directed.

Pumarlo: You want to stay relevant? Be accessible

A newspaper’s credibility is directly linked to its ability to identify, collect and report the relevant community news. Then why do so many newspapers make it so difficult for readers to connect with reporters?

Let me explain. I’m passionate in my belief that community newspapers still can claim a stronghold in today’s fractured media landscape – if they stick to the basics. That means owning the franchise for aggressive reporting of local news. That will occur only if readers have a direct pipeline to editors and reporters.

Yes, I understand the important and necessary role of social media both in collecting and reporting the news – in connecting with readers. Social media is integral in my day job directing communications and media relations for a statewide business advocacy organization.

But nothing replaces direct, one-on-one conversation. It’s truly amazing the barriers that so many newspapers place between themselves and their readers – their news sources.

A few tips from someone who has sat on both sides of the editor’s desk:

  • Post your contact information – prominently – on the home page of your website. Include phone numbers as well as e-mail addresses.
  • Provide the direct phone numbers and individual e-mail addresses for staff, if available. Readers have no assurance that a general voice mail or e-mail boxes are regularly monitored and messages forwarded to appropriate staff.

Deadline to request the specs is Friday, November 20, 2015. Both items will be printed in January 2016 for the annual convention, January 28 & 29.

Nominations Open for 2016 Half Century Club

Is there someone on your staff who has worked in the newspaper industry for 50 years or more? Nominate them for membership in the Half Century Club! Nominees must have worked in the newspaper industry for 50 years or more.  New members will be inducted into the Half Century Club at the 2016 MNA Convention during a special ceremony at the Friday, January 29 luncheon.  Members receive a certificate commemorating their 50 years of service to the newspaper industry

Alternative story formats have been shown to grab more readers’ attention, and allow readers to better retain information. This presentation gives an overview of how and when to use alternative story formats, and gives many examples.

MNA Public Notice Site - House Ads Now Available!

 
In 2014, MNA successfully launched its online clearinghouse of Minnesota public notices. Many MNA-member newspapers are up and running on the site, posting public notices weekly - or more often - on the 
site.

Now, MNA has developed a series of house ads you can use to promote MNPublicnotice.com in your newspaper and on your website. 
 
If you haven't started posting your public notices yet, and are interested in getting started, MNA will provide training and support. We are available to answer questions and walk you through the process of posting your notices. Please contact Sarah Jackson to sign up and also set up training for you or your staff - there are a variety of options, in person, by phone or Google Hangout.
