2016 Ad Design Contest Announced!

In 2017, MNA will celebrate its 150th anniversary! We’d like you to help us mark the occasion by creating an ad that both celebrates MNA’s important milestone – 150 years serving newspapers – and speaks to the importance and strength of newspapers in today’s modern society. Newspapers have been a vital source of information to readers since colonial times and through generations of change, still remain the number one place communities look to for news and information. Help us tell that important story with your 2016 Ad Design Contest Entry. Submitted entries should consist of one (1) quarter page (5.66” x 10.5”) full color print ad.

As always, MNA Convention attendees will review the ads and choose their favorites; winners will take home a cash prize and will play an important role in celebrating MNA’s 150th anniversary!

Winners take home cash prizes!
  • First Place: $500
  • Second Place: $250
Deadline to submit an ad for the contest is: Wednesday, January 20

Argus Leader sues city of Sioux Falls

Argus Leader Media last week filed a lawsuit against the city of Sioux Falls after the city failed to release details about a $1 million settlement regarding a construction dispute at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

The lawsuit filed in circuit court alleges that the city violated open record laws by refusing an Argus Leader Media request that city officials turn over records surrounding faulty panels installed on the $117 million event center.

The city and five contractors involved in the event center's construction settled the issue in September after months of secret negotiations about how outdoor paneling on the facility started buckling before the facility opened.

City Attorney David Pfeifle said the request to release the settlement was declined because the parties agreed to a confidential settlement.

"The construction of the Denny Sanford Premier Center was an important moment for our community," said Bill Albrecht, Argus Leader Media president and publisher. "It was approved and built using taxpayer money and on behalf of the taxpayers of this community. It is important that those same taxpayers see and understand the financial decisions made on their behalf, meaning finances must be as transparent as possible."

Please contact Sarah Jackson to sign up and also set up training for you or your staff - there are a variety of options, in person, by phone or Google Hangout.

Mohs to be Brainerd Publisher
Forum Communications Company announced Pete Mohs will be taking over as publisher of the Brainerd Dispatch starting Jan. 1, 2016.

"I believe Pete will be a tremendous publisher for the Dispatch," said retiring publisher Tim Bogenschutz. "He has already exhibited excellent qualities as publisher of the Echo/Journal. If you add to that his time as president of the Minnesota Newspaper Association, it is easy to see what kind of leadership lies ahead for the Brainerd properties."

Mohs will also continue to serve as publisher for Echo Publishing, which is part of the Brainerd market and includes the weekly Pineandlakes Echo Journal newspaper and Echoland Shopper. Continue reading...

Longtime Star Gazette advertising salesperson and publisher retires
The bitter cold of South Dakota prompted Steve Messick to seek shelter. All he wanted, he said, was something indoors and something warm.

Messick ended up finding a job in advertising sales at a newspaper and never really left the industry. Now, after 38 years with the same group of newspapers, the Hastings resident is retiring. His current position has him in charge of nine newspapers, 10 websites, 140 employees and a commercial printing operation in Red Wing.

It’s easy to say his desire to seek warmth worked out pretty well for Messick, who is 64. Continue reading...
