Burnsville, MN

Join the Minnesota News Media Institute and trainer Ed Henninger, one of the world’s leading design consultants for community newspapers, for a daylong workshop focused on news design.

Last summer, Ed's news design session sold out! This year, he's back in Minnesota for more.Ed has worked with newspapers all over the world and is bringing his expertise to MNA members for one day only!  Seats are limited so sign up today.

Morning session:

You Call the Shots is a bold, new presentation idea offered nowhere else. Leave it to Ed Henninger to break the mold again!

The concept is simple: We ask those attending what topics are most important to them. What questions do they have about news design? What do they most want to know? What design points can we clear up for them?

Attendees will review Ed's list of 101 topics, and check off the items they most want to discuss. We will tabulate the returns, placing those topics that gain the most interest at the top of the list for Ed's presentation.

Some of the topics are more about philosophy, design thinking and approach. Others focus more on assembly, design details and getting the job done quickly and efficiently.

Henninger: Outlaw funky fonts

Some call them “decorative.” Or “illustrative.” Or “expressive.”I call them funky fonts.

These are typefaces like Snowcap. Or University Roman. Or Comic Sans. Or Mistral. Or Barbatrick. Or Typewriter. Or Toolbox. Or Giddyup. Or Critters. Or Curlz. Or Nueva. Or… Or… Or…

They’re all funky fonts—and none of them deserves a place in your newspaper.

Funky fonts are: Cheap. Cliché. Dated. Silly. They’re also difficult to read. But the real problem with funky fonts is that they tend to draw too much attention to themselves, becoming a dominant part of the design of a page.

If you want to use funky fonts, save them for those advertisers who find them appealing. But let’s not use them in our page designs.

Funky fonts may have a place in other publications—like church bulletins or high school yearbook—but I can’t think of a designer for a high-class magazine (Elle, GQ, Vogue and NatGeo come to mind) who would debase a design with a funky font.

Please contact Sarah Bauer to sign up and also set up training for you or your staff - there are a variety of options, in person, by phone or Google Hangout.

Spring Valley Tribune, community newspapers sold to Spring Grove couple
An agreement has been reached to transfer ownership of the parent company of the Spring Valley Tribune to a local couple, Paul and Heather Gray of Spring Grove.

David Phillips, president of Phillips Publishing, Inc., which oversees the community newspapers of the Bluff Country Newspaper Group, said the transition is effective July 1.

Heather Gray started with the company in 2002, taking on the role of managing editor of the Spring Grove Herald. She is currently a part-time graphic artist for the company and has recently been working full time for an insurance company. She will begin full-time employment on June 29. Paul Gray joined the organization in 2008 as an advertising salesperson.

Phillips said he hadn’t thought about retirement, but when the Grays approached him about purchasing the company, he decided it would be in the best interest of the company to work out a process that keeps the newspapers in local control. The plan would also keep him involved in the operation for several years. Continue reading...
