Note From The Superintendent

Dear Southern Boone School District Family,

As the April 5th election quickly approaches, patrons in our school district will have the opportunity to vote for two new school board members and other local races. I feel it is important as citizens of the United States, to participate in the process to select who we feel represents us in our local government. I encourage you to take the time to vote in the April 5th election.

During next month’s election, voters will cast their ballots on a few different measures. There are three important questions that will be asked. The first ballot measure, Proposition 1, is actually asked twice, once for the City of Ashland, and again for Boone County. This ballot measure is asking voters to decide on a local tax applied to online sales. The amount of sales tax will be the same amount as if the purchase was being made in Boone County or in the City of Ashland. The revenue generated will help support the city and Boone County. More than 220 cities throughout Missouri have a use tax in place. Large cities like Kansas City, St. Louis, and Springfield also have a use tax. Cities in Mid-Missouri with a use tax include Boonville, Fayette, Fulton, Holts Summit, Mexico, Moberly, and Sturgeon. If Proposition 1 is approved by voters, the local sales tax for online purchases will go into effect in January 2023.

The other ballot measure has to do with the Southern Boone School District. The school board is asking the public to vote on a $3 million no-tax-increase bond issue. The funds would be used to make major improvements to the district’s outdoor facilities at the high school, including a new turf soccer/football field, new track, new scoreboard and sound system and improvements to the drainage system around the stadium and softball/baseball field. The remaining funds will address additional improvements at the high school and other district facilities.

Next month’s bond issue is the first of three possible bond issues focused on improvements at the high school.

Tentative plans for future bond issues include another no-tax-increase bond issue in April 2024, to build a new wing on the high school for the vocational, agriculture and FFA programs. Additional funds from that bond issue could also be used to address high school roof replacement needs, high school bathroom renovations, and safety improvements.

Finally, the third possible no-tax-increase bond issue would be in April 2026. This bond issue would focus on a new performing arts center and additional classrooms at the high school. The current band and choir classrooms are too small for the number of students participating. Additional funds from this bond issue would also go towards replacing the roof, HVAC improvements and additional updates and renovation projects at the high school.

Thank you to the community for your continued generosity and support of our teachers and staff!

Respectfully,

Christopher Felmlee
Superintendent of Schools

Our staff has planned several challenging and fun activities that address the academic areas of reading, math, science and social studies. Transportation WILL NOT be offered by the school district for summer school.

Summer school funding is provided by the state based on daily student attendance, so to provide a successful program, it is important for each enrolled child to be present.

The Southern Boone School Board of Education voted to place a no-tax-increase general obligation bond issue on the April 5, 2022, ballot, to be used for making major repairs and improvements to the district’s outdoor facilities at the high school.

The Southern Boone School District is asking the public to vote on the $3 million no-tax-increase bond issue that would provide funds to resurface the track, install new artificial turf and replace the scoreboard and sound system at the high school outdoor stadium. Passage of the bond issue will not increase the district’s property tax levy.

Thanks to the support of the community with passage of previous bond issues over the years, the school district has been able to address the needs created by rapid enrollment growth at the primary and elementary schools. Construction continues on the new addition and remodeling project at the middle school. That project was made possible by voters approving a $7.7 million no-tax-increase bond issue in the April 2021 election. The district is now wanting to start the process of addressing the issues and improvements on the high school campus.

School Board Recognition Week: March 6th-12th
March 6th-12th is School Board Appreciation Week! We want to take a moment to honor and highlight the dedicated service of the Southern Boone School Board of Education.

As a group of elected officials, school board members are tasked with making planning decisions at the district level. There are more than 3,600 school board members in communities across the state who pour countless hours into training, meetings, and other board duties. These public servants are elected by local constituents and do not receive compensation for their tireless efforts.

The goal of this week is to build awareness and understanding of the important function an elected board of education plays in communities and schools. We want to recognize the important contributions of these community members and focus attention on the vital role these public officials play in the education of children in our school district.

Operation SoBoCo Staff Appreciation
Over 250 boxes for Operation SoBoCo Staff Appreciation were delivered to central office this afternoon. The boxes will be delivered to the staff in each of the buildings on Friday. Thank you to Carrie Mertensmeyer of USA Mortgage - Team Ashland and Lorie Fussner with Iron Gate Real Estate for organizing this event. Also, thank you to the local businesses, organizations, parents and others for donating items and helping out. The school district appreciates this very thoughtful gesture and continued support from the community

Middle School's 3rd Quarter Student of the Quarter

All students were chosen as a part of the Student of the Quarter program sponsored by Central Bank in Ashland. We are so grateful for the partnership with Central Bank that allows us to celebrate outstanding students each quarter! Our Students of the Quarter get a yarn sign delivered by teachers and a pizza party the next day at school. Here are pictures of just some of the Students of the Quarter!
