Vanicia is in grade 9 and lives at Jane Street and Driftwood Avenue with her mom and 5 siblings in a Toronto Community Housing building. Vanicia's family is from Ghana. She loves basketball and was thrilled to receive a subsidized spot in her basketball program. Vanicia is a hard working athlete with a vibrant personality and an amazing smile. Vanicia found out she was going to the Rogers Cup, thanks to Kids Up Front, while she was at basketball practice. She was so excited she went straight there in her basketball uniform. She loved all of it: the seats; the sounds; the pace of the game and especially the VIP lounge. Vanicia’s mom also loved it and was incredibly grateful for the new opportunity that clearly inspired her daughter. Vanicia’s basketball coach describes Vanicia as “someone who is joyful even though she does not have a lot.†Vanicia’s new interest in tennis has brought her more joy.
Now Meet Ming.
It’s donors like Ming Lam who help Kids Up Front bring joy to children’s lives. Ming’s company donated their Rogers Cup tickets, through Kids Up Front, to Vanicia. To Ming, this was special. Here is what he said:
“I hope you can find a tennis fan among your network. I say this because I have a personal connection to free kids’ tennis programs. When I was younger, my family was quite poor: we lived in gov’t-subsidized housing in Winnipeg for much of my childhood, from when I was in Grade 5 until university. One day, a friend of mine dragged me to a kids’ tennis program. Luckily, it was free… I can’t tell you how much came from that one random event. Rolling forward many years, I look back to see that many of my best friends, and eventually my wife, were connections I made through tennis. I am thankful that today, those humble beginnings are in my rearview mirror, and I will never forget those free programs which eventually led to so many wonderful things in my life."
