We are living in challenging times and the coming weeks will present new difficulties in dealing with this pandemic. But we will get through this together, by following the advice of public health officials, taking all the necessary precautions, and by looking after each other. We have been advised that the capacity of Telehealth Ontario has expanded and you can call 1-866-797-0000 should you have health concerns. Our Kanata-Carleton community has an incredible amount of empathy as shown by all the fun games for children and helpful information being posted on our community’s Facebook groups and Community Associations’ websites. But while we are leaning on each other for support, we are also looking to all levels of government to enact measures to care for every single Canadian, especially our most vulnerable.
The Premier announced that Ontario has declared a state of emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and our Ontario NDP caucus has welcomed this decision. Our NDP Elected members continue to provide valuable advice represent to the government on the variety of needs facing our communities including:
income support for the unemployed
income support people who are self-employed
support for small businesses
protection of tenants
protection for those who are precariously housed or homeless
help for people on social assistance
assistance for low income seniors living on fixed incomes
The Prime Minister and Premier have both said “no one would be left behind” in Canada’s and Ontario’s emergency response to COVID-19, and that “no expense would be spared”. These comments are welcome as we await details on financial support and action to help those hit hardest by COVID-19.
The Ontario NDP and the Federal NDP have offered their assistance to both the provincial and federal government. We all agreed that in battling the spread of COVID-19, we are all on the same team. Going forward there will be plenty of lessons learned and time to benefit from those lessons.
Let’s flatten this curve together!
