The 2016 earnings recession is over.
As we approach the end of earnings season, the results have been encouraging. According to Thomson Reuters, blended earnings are up 7.1% for the fourth quarter and revenue is up about 4.2%.
Now the hard part starts. According to CNBC, the markets are anticipating double-digit earnings growth in all the major sectors throughout 2017. This is a tall order because companies are being very conservative on 2017 guidance. Nick Raich, founder of the Earnings Scout, noted that of those companies that have reported and commented on 2017 earnings, only one in four are seeing first quarter estimates raised by analysts, less than the three-year average. This cautious tone could be attributed to companies waiting to see if lower taxes, less regulation and increased infrastructure spending, which was promised by the new administration in D.C., will translate into higher profitability.
