State Representative Dave Rogers

UPDATES

This coming Tuesday (November 4th) is Election Day! Polls will be open in each of the communities I represent from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you do not know where your polling place is, you can find out here. You can also visit the town clerk or election commission sites for Arlington, Belmont, and Cambridge to learn more about voting in each community. Rides to the polls will be available in Arlington (courtesy of the Arlington League of Women Voters) from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and can be arranged by calling Phyllis Maddox at 781-354-0907. Rides to the polls will be available in Belmont (courtesy of the Belmont League of Women Voters) from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and can be arranged by calling 617-771-8500 or by emailing rides@belmontlwv.org. Although Cambridge does not have a League of Women Voters to offer rides, many candidates offer rides to the polls and you can contact their respective campaigns to see if a ride can be arranged.
Belmont Moves Towards Becoming a Green Community: The Belmont Board of Selectmen voted on October 17th to apply to make the town a Green Community. In line with a resolution already adopted by Belmont Town Meeting to reduce Belmont’s emissions by 80% by 2050, this decision submits an application to put Belmont in Massachusetts' Green Communities Program, through which the town will be eligible for state monies to help it in its efforts. The Green Communities Program is a subset of 2008’s Green Communities Act, landmark environmental legislation that has helped make Massachusetts a leader on energy efficiency and emissions. If Belmont's application is accepted, all of the communities I represent will be Green Communities (Cambridge and Arlington became Green Communities in 2010). I am proud to represent such forward-thinking, conscientious constituents.

Silver Maple Forest: As many of you know and have contacted me about, O’Neil Properties has begun to clear the Silver Maple Forest. Despite over 15 years of activism and advocacy at the state and local level, it seems that defeat may be near. My colleague and a long-time leader on this issue, State Senator Will Brownsberger, wrote a piece appraising where we stand that I think sums things up well. I am sad and disappointed that, on this issue, the efforts of so many over the years and my efforts since taking office have not been fruitful. I undertook a variety of efforts to solve this challenge. Earlier this year, I met personally, one-on-one with Speaker DeLeo in an attempt to secure state funding to help purchase the land. He gave me a fair hearing and took the matter under advisement. However, not long after, he and his staff made a determination that -- because the development is an affordable housing project -- the House would not act to stop it.

Belmont and Arlington Farmers' Markets Close for the Season: Unfortunately for the people of Belmont and Arlington, both towns’ farmers’ markets are now closed after successful seasons. Some Cambridge farmers’ markets will remain open into November (details below).
