McKee Homes Give Back:
Legacy Lakes Hero Project

McKee Homes is building a new home for Army veteran Jonathan Rivenbark and his wife, Yulia in their Legacy Lakes community in Aberdeen, NC. It will be customized to accommodate all of his physical adaptation needs because he has permanent nerve and muscle damage from being seriously wounded in 2012 during his second tour in Afghanistan. He now spends much of his time in a wheelchair.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new home was January 26 and drew more than 150 people, including Lt. Gov. Dan Forest, Aberdeen Mayor Robert Farrell, veterans, active-duty soldiers, military family members and others.
The Rivenbarks’ new home is being awarded to them at a low cost through the nonprofit group Helping a Hero, who provides specially adapted homes for severely wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Since 2006, it has awarded over 100 homes in 22 states, including five in North Carolina.
McKee Homes, Legacy Lakes and Mountain Real Estate Capital are partners with Helping a Hero in this project and are donating the bulk of the cost of the 2,600 square foot home, which will likely be valued between $250,000 and $300,000 when complete.
This specially adapted one-story home will have extra-wide doorways, no carpet, no steps, lower countertops, and a roll-in shower to accommodate Jonathan’s wheelchair.
McKee Homes has worked with many disabled veterans and even adapted some of their two-story homes for those with specific needs. They are happy to discuss the customization of almost any of our floor plans to meet the needs of anyone who is physically disabled to make sure their new home feels like home and help them feel comfortable and self-reliant.

Significant Changes to the 2015 International Codes
Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2-3 p.m.
Policy and Finance series

New homes are required by law to comply with state and local building codes and the standards referenced in those codes. Most jurisdictions that enforce a building code have adopted one or more of the family of International Codes (I-Codes) developed by the International Code Council (ICC). This webinar highlights significant changes to the 2015 editions of the I-Codes, particularly the International Residential Code (IRC) and International Building Code (IBC).
