Community members joined BMC, the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, the Brooklyn NAACP, and our City Council representatives Darlene Mealy and Al Vann last Thursday to learn about the Community Safety Act and what we need to prevent police abuse and discrimination.
The Community Safety Act, a package of NYPD reform bills, is under attack by Mayor Bloomberg. How can you get involved? Head over to Communities United for Police Reform to take action!
Tell 'Em Why You Mad Bed-Stuy mom, Rae Gomes, voiced her frustration over the verdict in: A Black Mother’s Wish For Her Son. How are you feeling? Need to vent? Contribute your thoughts to BMC's blog! Hit up Veralyn at vwilliams@brooklynmovementcenter.org. Articles, photos and videos are all welcome.
Anti-Street Harassment: Double Dutch Tournament On a sunny Saturday in July, we got our Double Dutch on and reclaimed our streets! See what went down on Decatur Street btwn Malcolm X and Stuyvesant.
Not many foundations make grants to Black-led, start-up, community organizing groups, but the New York Foundation's (NYF) early support of the BMC enabled us to hire staff and open an office in 2011. We're now entering our third year of funding and we couldn't have imagined a more valuable partner in the social justice movement. We thank NYF for it's leadership in the philanthropic community and for its dedicated support.
Crown Heights resident Errol Louis is our largest individual donor to date! When he's not supporting BMC's work in Central Brooklyn, Errol is taking on New York City politics on his show, Road to City Hall. Thank you, Errol, for doing your part to power the movement!
