This Holiday Season...
What Would You Do to Give Your
Kids the Best Possible Future?

Picture of the Seabolt family
Seven years ago, Dawn and Stephen Seabolt traveled from Atlanta to China to adopt their daughter, Kate. They knew Kate had albinism, which causes a range of potential vision problems. But the extent of Kate’s visual impairment would not be revealed until they came home.
Kate’s vision is blurred, her eyes are very sensitive to light, and she has nystagmus, which causes rapid, involuntary eye movement. Dawn and Stephen wasted no time researching resources that could help their three-year-old daughter thrive. Fortunately, they discovered the Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI).
Kate met other children with albinism, and her parents connected with other families who understood exactly what they were going through. Kate and her parents met independent, successful adults with albinism who showed them that life doesn’t have to be defined by blindness.
Last year, Dawn and Stephen traveled to China to adopt another child who is visually impaired. Their son Charlie, adopted at age seven, can see some color and light, but is functionally blind.
Today, Kate (now age 10) and Charlie (now age 8) both participate in CVI’s STARS program for school-aged youth, attending summer camps and weekend activities throughout the year. Their nine-year-old brother Sam, who is sighted, also joins in for fun family events like horseback riding, rock climbing and golfing.
Dawn and Stephen are grateful that CVI offers activities that their kids may not otherwise get to experience – and that the whole family can enjoy together. They recently discovered that Kate is a natural on the golf course – proving that the right opportunity can uncover hidden potential.
Dawn and Stephen did everything in their power to make sure that the future is bright for their children. Now, it’s your turn.
During this season of family, thanks and giving, please make a gift to help children like Kate and Charlie learn, grow and flourish.

On behalf of all of the families whose lives will be touched by your generosity, thank you!

CVI Smashes 2016 Goal
on Georgia Gives Day

Picture of STARS student holding up thank you sign
On Thursday, November 17, CVI participated in the 2016 Georgia Gives Day. Held annually, Georgia Gives Day is a statewide day of giving that challenges the public to make a donation to their favorite charity. This year, over 2,000 charities participated. In just 24 hours, donors contributed $11,855 to CVI – far exceeding our $8,500 goal for the day and well over the amount raised last year.
With the money raised on November 17, CVI also qualified for an additional, $1,000 incentive grant from the SunTrust Foundation as part of their Financial Wellness Challenge, bringing the day’s total to $12,855. Thank you to our wonderful community of supporters who showed their commitment to CVI on Georgia Gives Day, and made this event a huge success!

STARS Students Zipline to Adventure

Picture of STARS student ziplining
When we invited STARS students to make a list of activities they’ve always wanted to try, ziplining was one of the more exciting suggestions. To show that vision loss needn’t prevent anyone from doing anything they want to do, STARS staff went to work to make it happen.
After a little research (and a little more fundraising) STARS staff and volunteers came together on November 5 to give six students their very first ziplining experience, at North Georgia Canopy Tours. An exhilarating and unique adventure was had by all participants as they zipped from tree to tree, while learning about the forest habitat and wildlife.
Our thanks to North Georgia Canopy Tours for welcoming and accommodating individuals with special requirements, as they foster and sustain a higher level of consciousness and ecological responsibility by teaching the rich history of the area, its culture, and canopy life.
